Kirk Meyer ends his TI programming career
Posted on 24 October 1998, 20:43 GMT

I, Kirk Meyer, have permanently retired from all coding of calculators and computers. Some great changes have happened in my life such that these items are no longer at the top of my list, and never will be again. With that in mind, I will be releasing most, if not all, of my source code to the public. Note that I will attempt to finish Cymbol because I realize how many people need it. Realize that this does not mean that I will retire from the staff here; I hope to continue to work for ticalc.org at least through the end of high school. I will be revising my web page soon to reflect these changes and give you some more information.

I get it. The Monopoly fiasco was just a farce so you had an excuse to quit.

I have an "excuse", if you want to put it that way, to quit, and that excuse is that I decided that I want to actually have a life. I realize that lots of you don't understand that but too bad.

I actually understand that really well.....That's why i gave up computer/calc programming. I never released anything, but i programmed tons of stuff for teachers. And I found that there is no life in doing that. And being a calculator nerd does NOT get you the girls :)

In some classes I see more girls hudled over there calc than guys. So, hook her up with that awsome game, and you have her for life. Yea right.

I have to agree, I don't act like a nerd, but damn, if I program anything, INSTANT turnoff!!
Being a calc/computer programmer sucks, but the money looks good... oh well... good luck Kirk

I found this comment extremely prejudiced. Just because you program doesn't mean that you don't have a life. Some people enjoy it; for some people it's work. If it's getting too much like work or you don't want to expend as much time, lighten up some, take a break, quit if you want, but don't critize others for wanting to spend time programming for calculators.

Having a life
Michael Wyman
(Web Page)

Your are right that programmers can have lives too. However, people who make programming their lives do not have a social life.

For a while, programming was MY life. When I realized that I was becoming a hermit because of it, I stopped programming night and day. While I still program (for Linux in C), I don't program to the exclusion of spending most of my time doing other things.

Whatever your reasons for slackening the pace, Kirk, have fun!

Just my sqrt($.0004).

you mean sqrt($$.0004)

Well Kirk, you've done plenty for the community,
but I think you've put your own hobby down for
something (or probably someone) else. My advice
(although you're obliged to not take it) is not
to let someome you love destroy your life outside
of them. Women like that'll use you and lose you.
Even though I'm not sure that's why you chose to
quit, if it is, i hope you take my advice to a
certain degree. And thank you again for all you've
done.

God people can't you see that he has a life? Just be happy he did SOMETHING for the TI community. He could just be sitting on his ass but no, he decided to do something for everyone, and now that he's done with it, you're all being pissy! People like that make me sick. You never saw everyone getting mad at Jordan when he retired (and I'm from chicago too :)). Why does everyone have to be anal if someone decides to end their "career?"

preach on bc. why can't you just leave kirk alone?
does it really matter if he found a girl or
found religon(not saying he did)? it isn't your
life, let him deal with it. thanks for all your
good stuff kirk =]

Kirk Meyer was a truly excellent ASM programmer. He didn't just do games - he had a real committment to math. It's a pity that he "wants to have a life" now, after all, being a nerd isn't so bad. :-D But the hordes of maroonic high schoolers demanding calculator games would make me want to quit too.
Good luck in the normal world, Mr. Meyer.

I have a lot of things that I'd like to say about Kirk's decision, and the many responses. Right now I'm a college student for Electronic Computer Technology. "Getting a life" doesn't necessarily mean just giving up on something, it means being more realistic setting up new goals and following through with them. I bet Kirk has set many goals for himself, some that he has accomplished, and some that he has not. He might have decided to quit programming for one reason; not enough time. I'm very interested in programming for TI-Calcs, but being in college and working trying to find the time to learn something for "fun" is difficult. Lets all face it, Kirk has found something more worthwhile than programming for calcs. Be it a girlfriend, work, whatever, lets leave it alone and quit harassing his decision.

Geez guys, just because he decides not to program for calculators any more doesn't mean that you guys have a right to bash him. I believe everyone should respect his decision to leave programing for calculators. He did plenty to contribute to calculator programing and we should be greatful for that. Not say that he is smoking weed, or he finally discovered girls or religion or some sort. I give my respect to you Kirk, thanks for everything.

Well, I saw about 5 or so really well thought-out responses. The others were mostly from losers who called him a liar (when Kirk says it has nothing to do with religion and one tells him not to quit on account of religion, one calls Kirk a liar).

I've already responded to this, and I did it in email to Kirk. I won't go over it here except to say that it's his life, and I fully understand why he should want to put this aside and work on different things.

As for myself, I'm trying to write a program that analyzes and fixes the different TI file formats, and it's for all you losers out there who are too lazy to get a hex editor and patch the 10th byte of a file from $0C to $0A. Granted, a lot of new users have no way to know this, but a lot of people who call themselves programmers have no excuse.

After seeing so many people down on Kirk because he no longer has time to program (even though he's staying with ticalc.org), I feel rather despondant over working so hard to write programs to make calc user's lives easier when I could be doing things to further my Computer Science major.

That's just my (shortened!) opinion, I didn't even mean to go on this long.

Re: Re: Kirk Meyer ends his TI programming career
=P

I think you're just another loser, trying to show up your so called programming skills...who knows, maybe you just read that off one of the programming tutorials. If you were so good you would shut up and start programming things for yourself and not brag about irrelevant things like "the 10th byte blah blah..."

Just wondering why you didn't fill in your e-mail. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that you knew it was an idiotic post and din't want to deal with all of the flames you would recive.

I agree! this is the most sane post. In case you
forgot, THIS IS A HUMAN BEING! HE IS INCREDIBLY
TALENTED! IF I WERE HIM, I WOULD WANT TO MAKE
_MONEY_ WITH MY TALENTS INSTEAD OF WASTE THEM ON A
BUNCH OF (here I'm making a generlization, mostly
to the people who think he should be forced to
program against his will. you know who you are)
THANKLESS LOSERS! (yes, I'm aware I'm shouting.) I
wish he wern't leaveing, and I hope that he keeps
programming, if not for the 86. Ok, I've offended enough people now. Just remember that nobody has any obligation to do anything for anybody.
