Kirk Meyer ends his TI programming career
Posted on 24 October 1998, 20:43 GMT

I, Kirk Meyer, have permanently retired from all coding of calculators and computers. Some great changes have happened in my life such that these items are no longer at the top of my list, and never will be again. With that in mind, I will be releasing most, if not all, of my source code to the public. Note that I will attempt to finish Cymbol because I realize how many people need it. Realize that this does not mean that I will retire from the staff here; I hope to continue to work for ticalc.org at least through the end of high school. I will be revising my web page soon to reflect these changes and give you some more information.

Young hackas
I don''t have one
(Web Page)

I had no idea such little kids could program in assembly... cool, maybe some of you guys will keep up the market of technology and blow those "studies" away... you know like "Studies show that little kiddies aren't interested in choosing tech. as a career" (this has nothing to do with Kirk)

Where have you been? Most of the programmers now are teenagers

well, after reading twenty comments on religious stuff, i figured i would say something. (of importance)

check it out. we'll miss you meyer. you made some hella good games. it was also fun working on the beta team of monopoly. (even if it went bad, sort of)

for whatever reason it is, i'm sure it's something you understand. the world doesn't have to . . .

it's also good that you're sticking with ticalc for a bit.
anyway, life's a bitch. catch you later

Don''t question The Great Kirk Meyer!
Jean Vásquez
(Web Page)

Kirk is not quiting prgraming because he has found religion. I think that Kirk has found
a better way to enjoy life than programing. We all know that we cannot keep our great
programmers to continue programing for calculators all their lives. There are better things
to life than programing during free time, and I bet that Kirk has found something better for him. All great programmers have to move on, and now its Kirk's turn. I am glad that Kirk has found a life (or happiness for it) and I know that someone else will come along to replace the lost great programmer. One day Clem will have to stop, and JBrett will have to leave, and maybe Dux Gregis afterwards. Soon enough, David Phillips and HackNiN will have stopped. We cannot think that they will code forever. I respect Kirk, he has made some wonderful games that I have completely enjoyed, and I know that he must go, but there will be someone that will come that could reach the level of recognition that Kirk has. On a final note, we must leave Kirk alone, for I think he has made a sound decision. We mustn't flame him or question him, but we must respect his decision and live with it. I would like to wish Kirk good luck with his life, and I would like to thank him for all the great things he has made for us. I would also like to thank him for releasing the source to all his works. I think that was EXTREMELY generous of him, since many people will benefit from these files. And who knows, maybe these sources will shape the next great programmer.... I would like to see that, and I am sure that Kirk would also.

Under the advice of my friend JBrett, I would like to add Matt Shepcar (SCaBBy) to the list of great programmers that have made great contributions to the community. I am sorry for forgetting to include him in the first place, and I am sorry to the great programmers that I have forgotten to mention. I mean no offense or disrespect to them, but I only know so many of the top of my head. In short, SCaBBy will have to stop coding one day, and that will be a sad, sad day. Such day has occurred today with the "loss" of the Great Kirk Meyer.

Too much drama
brad

Why does everything in this world have to be so dramatic? Why are you trying to dramatize yourself Kirk? I for one couldn't care less why you're leaving but it pisses me off that you try and make it such a big production...

Why are you all so judgemental on people? He has given the TI community a lot. It is still his life, what is it to us whether he tells us why or why he does not do something. Thank you Kirk, I, at least, appreciate all that you have given especially the TI86 community. Why are you all harassing him for liking a religious quote? I am not a religious person, but if someone likes that, then so be it. Good poem too. If someone has to be so judgemental as to make fun of inner feelings such as that poem, you all can just grow up. The person who said he is a "weirdo"... who are you to say? Good luck in your career Kirk, have fun, and thanks again for all your contributions. I really hope the rest of you that post can realize what he has done before you go and post things ridiculing him.

Good God you guys!! So Kirk decides to do something else with his life. Instantly, it becomes either a drug related "problem" or a religuous "cult" experience or something.

Leave the guy alone.

I don't know why he decided to change either, but I wish him luck in his new life direction.

I quote bible passages, I wrote poems, stories, etc. I'm sure a lot of ppl have written songs and the like. It doesn't mean we are going crazy and going to kill our selves.

sheesh!

Re: Kirk Meyer ends his TI programming career
Rob

I read the poem and found some insite in it. Many people interpret poems to great extent, from the surface and easiest thought to understanding the man who wrote it. I don't know much about the "man", Kirk Meyer, but the poem's surface gave much resolution. I think you may have wrote this poem, not thinking about quitting the programming world, but realized a resemblance to your current status. Fishing, an easy task, was something you tried and understood. But when the fish taunted you and brought you down as the water gave way, you thought the fish didn't respect you as a "man" but only for the "bait." If programming makes the people see the programs without the "man", you have a good choice in finding a life that the people will see the "man" without his "works." This is only my interpretation and opinion, and I hope you find what you are looking for in life.

Who are you to say she's a bitch even if that is his reason for leaving? And are you so conceited that you think he is your slave and his only meaning in life is making games for you to jack around with while failing school? Well if thats the case then you should pull the cork out your ass and use it to plug that big hole you call a mouth.

someone

Everyone should just shut up about this. For christ sakes its just a person who made calculater programs. Its normal for someone to quit something like this because of certain things like MAKING MONEY!!!!! So everyone just shut the hell up and leave him alone!!!

Re: Kirk Meyer ends his TI programming career
Jonathan Whitfield

Why can't everyone just leave him alone? Does someone deciding that he doesn't really want to program anymore say that he is addicted to drugs, and what the heck difference would it make if he got religious? Calculators are not frowned upon in any religion that I know of. And he has the right (just like anyone) to keep his personal life to himself.

Well, I for one, do not care why he is deciding to quit programming, but am sorry that he is doing it. Very few people come along with his talent, and its bad that we are going to lose another great programmer from the TI Community. But, thank you Kirk for your excellent programs. Cymbol has helped me countless times in math, both Advanced Math and Calculus. So thank you, and best of luck with whatever you do next.

Kirk is cool. All you people complaining are just jealous cause Kirk is a better programmer than you. Just because you like his games doesnt mean that he cant have a life.
