Why not do what calc.org does (did), and put 'trusted authors' who can upload/update files automatically.

The three week wait is ok sometimes, but it is becoming average. If I paid for this service, I would say it is unacceptable.

Why not just get more file archivers?

i wanted to be a file archiver so i could upload files and approve them right away... but they never got back to me, even after i emailed them... i can't do it anymore though cus i have my own site to run (GO TO MY SITE, IT'S SO AWESOME)... so yeah... about the auto-update thing... remember the whole ticalc.org cd problem with 'innapropriate' material? yeah, that's why they can't do that... and think what people would do with that kind of freedom to upload files and have them instantly be on the site! that would be horrible, there are enough pointless programs on here already... and about the 'trusted authors' thingy... that wouldn't work either.. people would just become 'trusted', then as soon as they're trusted they jack up the site... (ti-fr.org had an image that loaded directly from my site... i was seriously gonna change it to something really bad like an old fat lady in a bathing suit... but f2s is gay and closed their free service... so yeah, i consider myself trusted, but think of what i waas gonna do to ti-fr.org)... btw, go to my site and submit your own programs and games.

Nice site, but Nesticle's old. You should put FCE Ultra on there. That is probably the best NES emulator for Windows. Some people have said RockNES is good too. I can't try it though; it doesn't work with Windows XP.

True enough, but 3 weeks is an awful long time. Granted that perhaps trusted wouldn't work, but why not hire more archivers and/or just rely on the users to catch inappropriate files.

Oh and as to irrevelent programs clogging up the archives, I suggest you check the TI-83+ BASIC math programs for how many Pythagorean thms there are.

On, and what really bugs me is when some BASIC "programmer" decides to list his BASIC program as asm (I have no problem with BASIC programmers, but those who LIE about it...)</OFF TOPIC>

I don't feel sorry for the file archivers one bit. If they were running a website with ASP off SQL server, all updates could be automatically put into the database. No extra person required.

If you want some more information about it, email me. I also know where you can get SQL server for a lot less than $25000.

We could easily make files appear right away if we wanted. It has nothing to do with what product you chose. It can easily be done with the postgresql database that we have, for example - it supports just as much such features as MS SQL Server.

And ASP most certainly has nothing to do with it - this kind of stuff is not handled by the webserver, since nobody with half their mind in order will allow the web server to write in the archives directories...

It'a s design choice. We don't *want* it to happen fully automatically, for several reasons. The downside of this design choice is that updates are a bit slower, but it's a tradeoff we chose to live with.

Implementing "trusted authors" a la calc.org is a way to deal with part of the problem. It's definitly worth considering.

BTW, it might be good to know: If you use the "Same Author Update" feature to update a program (meaning that you upload a file using the same accuont *and* the same filename [in the same directory, of course]when you upload the file, and then confirm that it is an update to that file), it will be processed faster.

This is only for updates, of course, but it should make a difference there.

I was just using ASP as an example.

I agree though, trusted authors make all the difference. I have to do a membership thing for ppl to update programs (not calc prog, unix and win) on my site, and yours is a lot more well known.

sry if i took up wasted space on the message board :)

PS: the site i'm talking about is not the link by name name.

I can vouch for this :)

I would also like to add that if a file already has screenshots, you don't have to keep uploading the same ones every time you update the file. Just upload the changed ones and leave a note to the archiver.

don't forget, people have been sneaking bad language and obscene materials onto programs. That's why the people @ TIcalc have decided to inspect programs for these materials

It's nothing we've never heard before. I hate taboos. The nudity taboo (ever had to change in a public locker room? try it, its harder than you think.), the sex taboo (you can hardly get straight information) and the language taboo (the stupidest of all!) are three of the things I hate most about human (or at least American) culture.

What is the point of declaring a word obscene? or an action for that matter? Who gave any man the power to say what is right and wrong? There IS no right, there IS no wrong.

heh, I'm off topic there. Anyway, I think that the best solution to swearing is to not restrict it at all; when people stop getting attention they'll stop.

How about adding a delete feature to the manage account thing?

Sometimes, when i upload a lot of files at once....
I make a mistake 1 out of every 10 files! Plus, replacing your own file does not work properly sometimes and you can't remove a file when you uploaded it to the wrong directory.

Maybe assign new archivers to certain subjects such as math, science, games, etc.

This might speed up the process of updating the file archives.

By the way, please update the files archives!!!! I still have like fifty files on pending right now....

I've never really had a problem with the file archives. Everytime I've uploaded something (not a lot yet...) However very soon I'll be uploading a bunch of files very soon. Anyhoo as I was saying, it's only taken about a day for my stuff to appear, even when pending is at its max, or maybe it's becuase I'm a true nerd and stay up late into the night working on miscellaneous projects.
