I originally asked for an 89 (birthday present) because I wanted to use it for math in my math classes since it was so powerful. However, I heard of the games and resolved to find them. Well, obviously I did. Then I became interested in the programming aspect of calcs and began to mess around with C when TIGCC came out. So now I'm basically a normal Jr High nerd who likes to play and program his calc. I voted for the optional in classes option since this was the original motivation behind the calc.

I use my TI-89 mainly for programming (RPGs take a long time!). I originally got it for, what else, math, but my test scores have gone DOWN since then, so I'm trying to teach myself only to use it to check my answers or when absolutely stumped. This is a very recommended thing to do - you need to know how to do the math yourself, even if you have the calc, because you may a. Not have the calc when you need the math or b. Be working on something based on the previous thing that the calc isn't any good for. Or, like in my case, the teacher could suddenly say one test day to show all your work or else :)

I answered "Testing and Debugging a Program" because I use the calculators mostly for programming. I also like to frequent the archives, however the joy is in the programming.
While I was at Cal Poly, I always had at least one cacluator with me to every class, whether it was math-related or not.

Strangely I've been using my 89 more as a traditional calculator--for numerical computation--lately, although the symbolic manipulation, especially the [limited] capability to do integrals has come in handy.
Mostly, though, this is because I've been too busy to program the calculator to do what I want it to lately. The 89 is really almost like having both MATLAB and Derive in your pocket, it's very useful but you need to tell it what to do.

I use my calculator in my math and science courses where it is optional. They say that it is required, but if you can do the work by hand, then you make better A's. I do not use my calculator for games. I rarely have time for it anymore, but when I can I do use it for leaning and experimenting, and even writing programs. I really haven't had time for that since high school, nor have I had the care to use it in that way.
Over ninety percent of my calculators usage comes is class-related, which includes the downloading of several calculus, statistics, and physics programs from the trusty tee eye calc dot org archives. Thanks guys, for always being there for me.
Don't go anywhere.

Even though I hate my 86, i'm too busy to buy a 89, even though I'll need one if I'm going to survive Calculus II. When I first got my 86, all I did on it was play games, but then I began programming on it. Now I actually use my calculator in class, when I pay attention of course, or program on it when I'm bored out of my mind.

I use my Ti-89 for geometry (well since geometry courses barely use calcs i play games) I also make programs on mine, as well as play games (occasionally, if theyre good!)
No relevancy here, but has anyone thought of making (or made) a Diablo 2-style game for the 89 ?

We aren't allowed to have calcs in school. They are so suspecious-I've NEVER played games in class on one, and been accused quite often. That and my 7th grade math teacher thought I was sending games from my 83+ to the crappy 82s the school has! 'Course she failed me in math and this year I have an A+, the first in several years. Go figure.
ANYWAY, I have an 83+. I used to use it mostly in school, it was handy to have it tucked away in my binder so I didn't have to use the school 83s. I just wish you could program asm on-calc, BASIC is boring.
I used to, and still do program math progs (BASIC rules for math.), like radical simplifiers. That is, until I lost my calc. (My hands start shaking)
