No, I don't need 'em. The calc I use has 4 AA batts. Can you guess which one? (Hint, there is no + in the title)
I have NEVER had to replace the batteries on that thing. Of course, I probably don't use my calc as much as some of you do.

I haven't needed spares yet. But, I don't think I would carry them around. They would take too much space and my TI-89 tells me if it needs new batteries enough ahead of time that I could go through the day once I see the warning. As soon as I get home, I'd replace them.
I don't see much sense in using Nickel Cadmiums. They die too fast. I use alkaline or rechargeable alkaline. I got my calculator in early November and haven't replaced my batteries yet. That's been almost four months of hours of usage every day.

They calcs (83+ and 92+ in my case) usually give me a fair amount of warning. I use them up pretty fast. On the 92 Plus, that's mainly due to Picalc. You know, the program that calculates pi to x amount of digets. I have lots of fun with that. On the 83+ it's mainly due to all the games I and my friends play on it. But like I said, I usually get a fair amount of warning.
