The one time I did was for my AP exams. It would have been exceedingly irritating to lose my calculator in the middle of a Part II section. Luckily, my batteries were fine.

Absolutely, if I remember right, I put in brand new batteries before the big ol' AP Exam. You can't take any chances.

Good idea. If I bring extras and they die I'll still lose time and possibly memory replacing them, but replacing them first will prevent them from dying!

back in the day when i took the ap exams, i put brand new batteries in my calcs so i would be prepared. i also brought along 4 extras (paranoid?) i thought i was doing good by that, but when i got there i realized i had nothing to write with. luckly, i showed up incredebly early and had time to run to the nearest store and bought a really nice mechanical one. i also bought an entire refill case. no, not a single tube of lead, but an entire case. it had 24 tubes of lead in it. i think i still have 23 of them

If you aren't good at arithmatic, carry spare batteries
pantherace13  Account Info

Very good thing to do. I didn't and my 83+ died a few minutes into the AP Calc test. However, pencil and paper work fine :)
(got a 5 on it, even with that, and yes for arithmatic I can do it faster in my head than it takes others to get their calculators out, type in the numbers and read the answer, up to about 2xx x 2xx, otherwise I would have been dead)

I carry about 12 (I think. It is a multiple of four) batteries in my backback. AAA's are scarce in my house, so when my mom buys a value pack I snitch four and keep them. They are also useful when someone else needs them for just a minute to say send Flash software to them and TIOS reports batteries are almost dead.

Am I the only person who procrastinates and finds out the hard way when the calc is about to go dead? I don't really care when it runs out of juice since I'm usually not away from home very long.

I have a TI-89 and it has that little BATT warning and I know that I will have to replace my batteries soon. Why would TICalc post this item? Are they running out of ideas? I almost didn't even reply to this.

It is, but it could have been better. How about something like

"What is your religion?"
OR
"Do you know much about DOS?
OR
"Do you believe that a government should be allowed to keep non-militery secrets?"
OR
"Do you have your own computer?"
OR
"Do/does you/your family own a laptop?"
OR
Write about the topic in your own way.

Does anyone remember this from the MEAP? the OR... OR... OR... OR... write about the topic in your own way?

Ok, ok, I'll stop.

Looking at some of the posts, it may be a good topic to ask what kind of battery one uses ex.
Energizer
Duracell
NiMh
NiCd
etc.

I know I missed a lot of brands and types, but this is just an example.

Wait... Why do we need to wait for Ticalc to do it? Lets just post here!

I use Duracell Ultra batteries

Hey now, I must support the inane minority here. I found a camera case that, after a long search, exactly fits my calculator (TI-86). In it is the main pouch, which I put my calculator in, and bus schedules, floppies, pens, laser pointer, etc. It also has a second pouch, smaller and in the front. In that one I have a mini-altoid tin, my link cable, a round ear-bud thing, a RS 2.5 mm -> 3.5 mm adapter (so I can plug the headphones into it, and it into my calc, I also have a nice little 4 pack package of Duracell Ultra (R) AAA batteries, and a ECR1616 in it's case in case that ever needs replacing! I throw the case into my backpack and go wherever, always knowing I'm prepared for anything! I even roll up my graphlink and bring it when I know I'm going on a long trip (aka out of State). Well, that's just the perspective from the Uber Geek. Anyone else out there do anything like me? Or am I just weird?

I thought I was the first to use an Altoid tin. I take my 89 to school and in the handy little tin I have my link, some spare batteries and a Swiss Army Tinker with a bunch of little screwdrivers in it.

The batteries are there for the obvious reason, the link for gaming and sharing of programs, and the Swiss Army for its screwdrivers in case I need to remove all the batteries in case of a crash.

I said never. I don't unless I was on a long trip.

Off topic, but I'm working on an amazing new crypto program for the TI-86. It will work on the Viginere cipher. But I need to know, how do I combine two strings on the 86?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, my native language is English. I did that cuz I lke German, and I felt like it. :) Did you know that if you have Bess Blocking Software at school, you can bypass it by going to world.altavista.com and having them translate the English page from French into English? Or for any language. Pretty fun. :)

my school also has foolproof and it is so amazingly easy to get around. push the little reset button on the front since its not yours(shut it down if u're nice) press f8 to get to the safe-mode, normal mode prompt, boot up in safe mode, delete the folder that foolproof is in or you can rename the folder. either way, it still gets rid of it. all you have to do after that is reboot, it will say something like a required file cannot be found and will not be run. press enter, then when in windows, do whatever

Thanks for the tip...

Even though at my school it's easy to bypass Bess by just removing any proxies, I often feel guilty (it's easy to get caught) doing that. Sometimes, though, they lock up the IE configuration thing (not Netscape) so you can change it.

Going back to the topic of the debate, I think I'm the only one here who doesn't have batteries in his calc (EasyCalc on my Palm fulfills all my needs). Back in my good ol' days last year, however, I used to carry it in my pocket and play games whenever I had my chance. I never found a need to replace batteries in school, though.

Is Foolproof the thing that keeps you from control panel and run?

If so, when you delete it, you could run regedit, but I don't recommend it unless you're experienced.

to combine 2 strings on the TI-86:

string1+string2->string3 ;"->" is store
or...
"blah"+"blah"->string3 also works.
the order in which you add them is significant. if you want to add a space at the beginning, put space+string, or, string+space if you want it at the end.

and on the subject of programming, how does one prompt for a variable in TI-86 Assembly to make it like the "Prompt" command in BASIC? (newbie question)

i havent been in the 86 asm feild for a while...but i'm guessing that its the same thing as an input command, displaying the "variable"=? thing.

hey knight/rocket about taking all of the batteries(lithium and AAA) out if you have a crash, it is not neccesary if you have flash archive downloaded to your calculator. you have to take a battery out of the back and press on, but when you have flash apps the apps reboot and i guess clears out the error, making it very simple to keep on moving. i once had an archived crash on my calculator which is hell because in order to clear the crash you are required to take out ALL batteries(a problem running a program during a math test). downloading an flash apps is worth its weight in gold if only for a crash clearer. when you put the battery back in after a crash it shows a bar (like your computer does when you download games off of ticalc archives)that goes from 0-100%. once the bar turns black all the way across your calculator goes to the homescreen. of course if all of your programs are archived which they SHOULD BE!, you won't loose anything!!

disregard this if you have a calculator other than the TI-89 and TI-92+. i have absolutely no experience with the other flash apps calculators.

thanks for your time

Only a nerd if a nerd is what you want to be.
Knight/Rocket Account Info

No one here is a nerd. You see, a "nerd" is state of mind that the person has to desire to maintain through removing oneself from the natural flow of life.

If a person is a nerd, that person most likely spends their time rewiring calculators to run differently, memorizing pi tables to the millionth digit, developing a matrix to count the blades of grass in a given yard, and other largely useless, but challenging activities.

If a person wishes to be a nerd, they can fulfill this definition in their minds only. Nerd is not a title that can be given by others.

Knight/Rocket's 4c.
