No doubt about it! It's simple to use and works! *so there's no point installing other shells if this works perfectly fine. Great for the average n00b.

Yeah, it runs _almost_ every program, so I'm happy with it. Though, currently, I don't have any shell on it right now because I was programming something in BASIC. Whenever I'm working on a program in BASIC, to be safe, I like to keep everything stable (because you can't archive stuff on a TI-82), and I'm too lazy to keep sending the newest updated version to the computer as a backup.

Yes, it distorts the results horribly ... that's why it wasn't in my original proposal.

I don't have a 82, but if MV's emulator is released, I may have a virtual one. :-) Then we'll see.

Okay, I got out my TI-82 (what do you know, the batteries still work) and it had Ash on it. I also noticed I have two vertical lines of pixels missing instead of just one like last time.

My TI-82 is my second oldest calculator. I got it around Christmas of 1994.

Whoa that's quite a long time to have a graphing calculator. Why are pixels missing?

I'm not sure, probably because it's so old. The pixels worked fine while I used it actively. It was after it began to spend most of its time sitting on a shelf (after I moved on to newer calcs) that the pixels started to disappear.

I have CrASH on my TI-82. However, I am the fourth owner of it and there are usually 3-8 verticle lines of pixels missing.

My 82 has that problem as well. I took it out a week ago and found about 10 vertical lines that were malfunctioning.

Hmm, seems to be a common problem with them. Though, it hasn't happened to mine and I've had it for a pretty long time. Maybe I'm lucky? :)

Do you play catch with it or something? A friend of mine does and it's about 8 years old since it was bought first hand. Nothing wrong with it.

I have a problem like that on my 83(not +).

It was probably the TI-85, or possibly, the TI-81.

The TI-81 was TI's first graphing calc, so *nothing* could be older than that...

...except for the ti 80. :^)

does anybody know why they use Ti-"8X" or "9X" in their model numbers?

Well, the 8X line all have the same case layout. I am guessing that they were going to do likewise with the 90's, but for some reason opted out of continuing that.

I think the X is supposed to be a wildcard-type character, but I dunno...

8X is usually used to include 8(3|4) Plus (SE)... Isn't this correct? ^_^

I said that they used the same case layout. I don't understand why you would respond with what types are in the 8X line, so I guess I am misunderstanding you.

I think what he is asking is WHY they use 80's and 90's rather than, for example, 20's and 30's or something like that...

When they were looking for making the 81, they were sitting around and someone said, what should we call it? Someone else said, in a smartass tone, "Why not call it the TI-81." The first guy, drunk as the other guy, did not know he was joking and put the name on it.

Years later, they were designing a new calc, the 92, ofcourse not named. wanting the first of this line to be of a higher number they chose the 90's. Of course, starting off with 91 would not do, seeing that is was started with 81, so the 92 was born.

Having model numbers in the 80s might come from the fact that the processor was a z80.

The original TI-81 did not (according to ticalc.org's documentation) have a Z80 processor. But then again, maybe they put them in the 80s in anticipation of using a Z80 processor later, but lack of anticipation of the 68000 in the TI-89.

That and ti needed a number bigger than 48.

I've been googling and the only info I found is that the ti81 has a 2 mHz z80. The ti80 on the other hand has a 980kHz custom chip. Are you saying that the ti81 software origionally written for the custom chip was then ported to the z80?

ooops .. it seems I got those mixed up, and was actually thinking of the processor of the z80. Though seeing that that TI-81 has only a 2Mhz processor I'm getting the feeling that I really don't want to see what it's performance is.

Ummm... no... just because the TI-80 has a lower number doesn't mean it came out first. Actually, IIRC, the TI-80 came out after the TI-82.

My oldest TI graphing calculator was the TI-81, which I think I got a few months before my TI-82.
