Jimmy Mårdell bags Google CodeJam
Posted by Magnus on 15 November 2003, 21:32 GMT

Jimmy Mårdell, author of many great programs and games in our archives (anybody heard of ZTetris? Sqrxz?) has just won the Google CodeJam. See an article about it from The Mercury News.

A great big congratulations to Jimmy!

If you have a TI82/83/83+, get ZTris. It is based on ZTetris, but is a lot smaller. Should be at the bottom of Jimmy Mardell's author page.

I agree that Ztris is better the Ztetris, this is because with Ztetris, you push the "on" key, and poof! your calc resets. With Ztris, it no longer happens:)

I think that was an anti-cheat mechanism to stop people from using the MirageOS slow-down function :)
I think that an "im 1" or even "di" would have been friendlier :)

But if they disabled interrupts, would that mess up the game? Maybe not, but I just kinda guessed that they used interrupts in the program, most likely for the link. I'm too lazy to look at the source ;-) lol

OK, OK. Fine.
:(
Though, my unfinished project Army Men had 2-way linking and no interrupts :)

I never figured out linking in z80 ASM. Is it hard? My guess is that you'd just in and out from the ports... it seems easy, but stuff like that never works for me (I tried to make a linked program in C- I couldn't get the constant i/o to work).

"stop bugging me," said the z80.

yeah, but polling has higher overhead than interrupt processing: it must be done even when there would be no interrupt.

Ooh... okay, that would jump to memory location 234 (hex: 00EA), right? What does that do? I wanna try! Does it work on the TI-82, or just the TI-83? Hehehehe...

Should work on any calc-it also should bring an amazing crash.

234 is not important... it's just a random number I picked up.
You could try the shorter version:

pop hl
ret

This proves that programming a TI can get you places :)

I seriously doubt that he won because he programmed graphing calculators, but hey, if that's what you want to believe...

it's called EXPERIANCE WITH ALITHOGRAMS! (and problem solving!) programming in one way carries over to another in thinking abilities! btw how come he hasnt made a comment here ?

Maybe not, but programming graphing calculators can only increase your overall programming ability and problem solving skills. I'd say it helped.

This is all I have to say to people who have said that programming for TI calculators is worthless and a waste of time: HA!

Yeah, I always get the weird glare when I tell them I program for calculators. Now we have this great news to show the nay-sayers.

Congrats to you Jimmy. Best of luck. It's kinda like feeling a family member succeed. Feels great that the TI community is excelling.
