Voyage 400 Leaked
Posted by Michael on 1 April 2003, 05:57 GMT

Update: Please note that this was a joke. Please do not contact Texas Instruments or any of their resellers asking about this product - it does not exist.

TI is developing a new calculator, the Voyage 400. Leaked specifications and photos from TI have been floating around since Saturday. It appears to follow the tacky case colors of the existing calculators, but what really matters is that it has a 256-color LCD! It also features a 66 MHz ARM processor (presumably with 68k emulation?), 16 MB of flash, and an IR port with a "teacher select" to disable for testing. The scheduled release date is in August. Unfortunately I don't think there is sound, but this definitely is a nerd's dream.

Update (Henrik): New information received from an anonymous source indicates that there is no sound output, but there is a link port that could possibly emulate sound output, like we have seen on other calcs. Further, there is an emulation layer so that Flash applications compiled for the Voyage 200 will be able to run unmodified. We will disclose further information as we get it.

Update (Michael): ph33r my 31337 9R@pHIC5 5kilL5!

Update: Again, please don't contact Texas Instruments regarding this non-existing calculator.

Anyway, I recently aquired one of sony's latest palm pilots, a 200Mhz, 65365 colour 320*320 pixel screen device that fits in my (better) shirts' pocket. built in speaker, headphone port, and thumbpad. needs a calc emulator tho...

When you consider the fact the the current models (89/92 Plus) are slow at 3D graphing, yeah, 66MHz is good. 100 is better!

Also, what kind of batteries does it take? My TI-92 Plus took AA, and that was good. My Voyage 200 takes AAA, and it sucks.

If you are implying that the calculator consumes a lot of battery power, then voltage isn't the way to do it. Most car batteries are actually only about 9V...

They're actually 12 volts, but you have the general idea, they have a very high amperage.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Voyage 400 Leaked
Beta

Are you sure about that?

I've never seen a 32V battery. TI probably wouldn't use a battery that isn't easy to find, unless it's rechargable. And what on the calc would need 32V anyway? I don't know how many volts my Compaq iPAQ uses, but it's definitely less than 32, I'd guess 6 or so. Unless they've done something odd, there would be no need for 32 volts, and if they did, they could put in a DC-DC voltage converter....

// The battery gauge on a car hovers around 14V

Car batteries should be around 13.8 volts to allow for regulation. (7812 twelve volt regulators need at least 13.5v to regulate to 12v, 7805s, 5v, need 6.5 or more volts.)

yes, for example, maple and other similar programs for the PC put even the best calculator ever, the 89, to shame. There needs to be a hand held calc out there that has the power to do complex stuff(such a descriptive word). Though 256 colours is not necessary, the only purpose would be for games, pictures, video clips, or other non-math based stuff.

I love my TI-92 Plus and will probably buy one of these when they come out, but my Zaurus PDA kicks it's but in every aspect. If you start putting audio and video on a calc, just make it a PDA. I would really like to see a PDA with a programming language like TI Basic. That would be cool. The only reason I would by one of those would be to program on it and the only reason why I don't just do it on my Zaurus is because I'm lazy and don't want to take the effort to get all the editors and compilers and learn how. TI has it all right there for you!
