Happy Pi Day!
Posted by Joey on 14 March 2003, 01:00 GMT

In honor of this most nerdy of holidays, I am typing this article on my TI-89 with the assistance of my TI-Keyboard. There are a few pi-related things worth mentioning...

  • If you haven't already, go out and rent the movie Pi. Although it is rated R [in the USA -- Henrik], I saw it when I was 15 and received no ill effects. It is absolutely worth plunking down a few bucks for, unless you have some strange aversion to power drills. (Shhh... don't ruin it!)
  • Since last Pi Day, the record for the most digits of pi calculated was broken. A super-computer cluster in Japan calculated a whopping 1.2411 trillion digits of pi. (Of course, my cluster of Beowulf TI-81's will beat that some day.)
  • Although it has been available since 1999, it's worth mentioning Andreas Wahlin's Pi Training for the TI-89. By using it, I have managed to memorize 133 digits of pi.
  • 99% of girls and English teachers do not care at ALL about Pi Day, and will look upon you unfavorably if you mention it. General rule of thumb: Do not mention Pi Day to anyone unless you wouldn't feel silly telling them that "all your base are belong to us."
  • Nerd holidays are excellent excuses for postponing tests and eating pie during class. At the time of this posting, it isn't yet Pi Day in the U.S., so you've still got plenty of time to run out and buy pies for your math class. DOITGORIGHTNOW!
  • At 1:59PM (and 26 seconds, if you feel the need to be precise), it is advisable to spontaineously recite all of your memorized digits of pi aloud. Do this even if you think pi = 3.1416.
  • Instead of sleeping, spend all night wondering why ln(-1)/i = 4*(.5!)^2 = pi.
  • Keep in mind that being a nerd is a great gift, and that it will pay off in the long run. Word.

I can see myself now... I will be in physics class at that time, in the computer lab, but if I want to send it over the network to people I know too, I'll have to shut down quick, cuz that class is over at 2:01... At least I will spontaneously say "Happy pi day 3.141592653" (sadly, that's all I know as of now :( )... I tried to get other people to do the same (if they don't have mean teachers), and I want to have at least the first 50 digits written down somewhere to read it from...
*Gets good idea* I wonder if I could convince the administrative staff to make a PA announcement at 1:59 (I wouldn't even ask for 1:59:26 cuz I know they'd screw it up) and say "Excuse the interruption... Happy pi day!" (*can hear Mr. Korecki (assistant principal, the guy that does most of the announcements) saying it now* :p )

Anyhow, if I do send it over the network, I'd spend at least 2 minutes sending myself messages trying to sync the time so I get the correct timestamp on the messages (it says "Message received from MAIN on 03/14/2003 01:59:26 PM" or something... crap... I just realized... it might do 24-hour time... but I'm, not sure...)...

Congrats getting the time stamp right :)

I just got a brilliant idea...

I should stay on until 8:26 PM EST... That would be 1:26 AM GMT... >:) I checked, and my watch is on the same minute as the server, so I should be able to time it just right...

I think that the first person to post a message in reply to this with the time stamp 14 March 2003, 01:26 GMT should get something, maybe an honorary message or something...

*Sets an alarm for 8:20 to make sure he's here and ready to post.*

OK, Here it is...
AndySoft  Account Info

If I timed this right, the timestamp should be 14 March 2003, 01:26 GMT. Well, now I gotta wait a minute before clicking Post...

I HAVE THE OFFICIAL PI DAY TIMESTAMP!!!

*Quickly checks all other comments areas for "01:26" with the "Find in page search" in Opera... or maybe google: [site:http://www.ticalc.org "14 March 2003, 01:26"] would be better :p*

So, did the school plan work?

     14 March 2003, 18:24 GMT

YES!!!!!!!!!
AndySoft  Account Info

And it was a huge success!!! :) (Well, huge enough :p )

I went overboard last night and made "Pi Facts" handouts like the Chemistry teacher did for mole day (like I care :p ). I'll put the HTML version up somewhere sometime soon and link to it... I also made a page that just had "Happy [pi] Day!" and the first 1024 digits of pi (1024 not because its 2^10 but because it filled the last line up... on the handouts. I didn't feel like getting more) and put it outside my Algebra teacher's door. I also made a full-page version of the Pi Facts and taped it on my locker. Unfortunately, I didn't eat any pi[e] today... :(

I'm up to 3.14159265358979323... But I sent 3.1415...582097 in the message because that's where I folded the paper. I sent it to everyone in physics class (selected all the PHYSICS users :p ), the physics teacher (logged in in his room), my Honors Algebra II teacher, my Spanish III teacher (she is an avid pi fan :p, more later), the network admin (we're close friends), and a friend in Computer Applications I (read: typing class, although they do 1 Corel Presentation). I didn't have time to badger the office to get it put on the morning announcements or at 1:59... Didn't have time to in the morning because someone wanted a copy of the big "Happy [pi] Day!" sign and I forgot at lunch (well, I didn't want to go alone...).

(See next post.)

Spanish class: I'll try to be brief, but here goes: We have a "president" and "secretary" (everyone in class does both) that start the class off. The sec. reads the previous day's minutes, gives the weather, and a news item... I was sec. today and (for the sake of non-Spanish students I'll do everything in English) the news item was "Today is the day of 3.14159265358979323846264228327..." (I stopped there; also, I didn't check what I typed to be accurate). I also gave a 4 Question Quiz:
1) [pi]: a) > 3.14 (b) = 3.14 (c) < 3.14
2) another way to write [pi]: a) (1+1/n)^n (b) -i*ln(-1) (c) -1*log(-i) (d) 4*.5!^2 (e) both b and d
3) [pi] day ends at: a) midnight (b) noon (c) 1:59:36 PM (d) 1:59 PM (e) 3:14 PM
(they got #3 on the 5th try lol)
4) the 1000th digit of [pi]: a) 3 (b) 9 (c) 4 (d) 0

(Why don't you guys take the quiz :p )

My English teacher must be in that 1% because he let someone (I think I know who) put "Happy Pi Day!" on the board. I modified it to be "Happy (end of) Pi Day!" when I went in there because that was at 2:09.

All in all, I had a productive Pi Day.

One last note: People were actually talking about Pi Day throughout the day! The entire school of ~ 700 people (well, most of the school at least) was aware that today was not just the last day of the 3rd quarter and the last day of school before a 3 day weekend (just for the students)! It was FUN!!!!!

And no_one_2000_: I just can't STFU. Whether typing or talking, I ramble. Except in class... (Go figure...)

LOL :) Sounds like you had a good Pi Day!!!!! You're lucky that the administrators like you :) They all got mad at me for accidentally sending a mesage LOL
We did haven't school today (Spring Break Week) :( So I didn't get to show off my memorization of 144 digits. When we go back, I'm going to make "Happy Belated Pi Day!" papers and put them around ;-) And then, if I get in trouble for that, I'll just say I lost them LOL They took away from logon access for a month (for the Winpopup thing), but I found out later that they don't know how to deny access! [morons] I had a "patry" when I came back. I had all these pieces of paper that said "PHIL GOT HIS ACCOUNT BACK! HAHAHAHAHA!" and I made a paper hat that said "I GOT MY ACCOUNT BACK! WINPOPUP! WINPOPUP!..." I'm going to stop typing now because Norton is scanning our computer for viruses (like it does every Friday at 8:00) and it's slowing the whole computer down to a crawl. The typing is so delayed that it's just annoying :)

There was a math teacher at my middle school who was about as dedicated to Pi day as you: She read Pi Poetry, served pie, tought the students how to calculate Pi, and discussed the importance of Pi through history and today.

Too bad I never had her as a teacher (I was in advanced math).

I convinced the people in the office at my school to add a "Happy Pi Day" announcement to tomorrow's bulletin. This oughta be good. :o) Can anyone tell me (perhaps no_one, since he's had experience) how to use Winpopup to send out a Pi Day message? I wanna use it on the server in my Comp Sci class. Thanx.

Both Anupa and Agie have been infected with the Mole Day "disease". There's nothing WRONG with Mole Day, but Pi Day is obviously SO much better. I mean, whoever scheduled Mole Day didn't even have the good sense to pick the right day. Wouldn't 6/02 make much more sense than 10/23? I mean, come on...

Re: Re: Re: Happy Pi Day!

Also, who cares about mole day? Chemists (ick!), and not many more people. Pi day? Mathematicians, physicists, bakers, candlestick-makers... (OK, those last 2 don't make much sense, especially that last one... Oh well :p )

My point: Pi day is *MUCH* more important than mole day.

arghh, and I am in chemistry too, that was incredibly stupid, doing eq now, pi day is better though. a mole is rather arbitrary isn't it? it is not as though avgardiowhatshisname's number bears any relation to the physical world, like pi does?

Nope. It just tells me how many molecules are in one mole of something. Pi, on the other hand, as previously noted, relates to everything circular. It is also an integral part of trigonometry and is used for radian measure. Not only that, it's a number we'll never be able to completely calculate. So Pi Day is more special than Mole Day.

My chem teacher last year made us do a Mole Day project (either make a stuffed mole or a shirt celebrating Mole Day, which you got to wear all day to make a fool of yourself). Obviously, I made the mole. :)

Avogardro's number is the number of atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12. So that's 12 g / (6 mp + 6 mn + 6 me). This is very close to 12 g / (12 mn), the number of neutrons in one gram, which is also pretty darn close to the number of protons in a gram.

Pi Day superior to Mole Day?! I beg to differ...Mole Day can certainly be as fun and wonderful as Pi Day. Especially when a bunch of mole inside jokes influence it all. Yeah, so I'm biased... Anyway, a group of friends and I did the whole Avogadro's-number-on-the-t-shirt thing and I made a banner. Someone even went all-out (hey, it was the first year we knew of its existence!) and decorated their locker all snazzy. Labeling the 6.02*10^23 on a shirt is even a question on one of those "what's your nerd percentage" quizzes on the back of fake nerd apparel packaging. Cool, yes? =P
