Happy Pi Day!
Posted by Joey on 14 March 2003, 01:00 GMT
In honor of this most nerdy of holidays, I am typing this article on my TI-89 with the assistance of my TI-Keyboard. There are a few pi-related things worth mentioning... - If you haven't already, go out and rent the movie Pi. Although it is rated R [in the USA -- Henrik], I saw it when I was 15 and received no ill effects. It is absolutely worth plunking down a few bucks for, unless you have some strange aversion to power drills. (Shhh... don't ruin it!)
- Since last Pi Day, the record for the most digits of pi calculated was broken. A super-computer cluster in Japan calculated a whopping 1.2411 trillion digits of pi. (Of course, my cluster of Beowulf TI-81's will beat that some day.)
- Although it has been available since 1999, it's worth mentioning Andreas Wahlin's Pi Training for the TI-89. By using it, I have managed to memorize 133 digits of pi.
- 99% of girls and English teachers do not care at ALL about Pi Day, and will look upon you unfavorably if you mention it. General rule of thumb: Do not mention Pi Day to anyone unless you wouldn't feel silly telling them that "all your base are belong to us."
- Nerd holidays are excellent excuses for postponing tests and eating pie during class. At the time of this posting, it isn't yet Pi Day in the U.S., so you've still got plenty of time to run out and buy pies for your math class. DOITGORIGHTNOW!
- At 1:59PM (and 26 seconds, if you feel the need to be precise), it is advisable to spontaineously recite all of your memorized digits of pi aloud. Do this even if you think pi = 3.1416.
- Instead of sleeping, spend all night wondering why ln(-1)/i = 4*(.5!)^2 = pi.
- Keep in mind that being a nerd is a great gift, and that it will pay off in the long run. Word.

I can see myself now... I will be in physics class at that time, in the computer lab, but if I want to send it over the network to people I know too, I'll have to shut down quick, cuz that class is over at 2:01... At least I will spontaneously say "Happy pi day 3.141592653" (sadly, that's all I know as of now :( )... I tried to get other people to do the same (if they don't have mean teachers), and I want to have at least the first 50 digits written down somewhere to read it from...
*Gets good idea* I wonder if I could convince the administrative staff to make a PA announcement at 1:59 (I wouldn't even ask for 1:59:26 cuz I know they'd screw it up) and say "Excuse the interruption... Happy pi day!" (*can hear Mr. Korecki (assistant principal, the guy that does most of the announcements) saying it now* :p )
Anyhow, if I do send it over the network, I'd spend at least 2 minutes sending myself messages trying to sync the time so I get the correct timestamp on the messages (it says "Message received from MAIN on 03/14/2003 01:59:26 PM" or something... crap... I just realized... it might do 24-hour time... but I'm, not sure...)...
Congrats getting the time stamp right :)

And it was a huge success!!! :) (Well, huge enough :p )
I went overboard last night and made "Pi Facts" handouts like the Chemistry teacher did for mole day (like I care :p ). I'll put the HTML version up somewhere sometime soon and link to it... I also made a page that just had "Happy [pi] Day!" and the first 1024 digits of pi (1024 not because its 2^10 but because it filled the last line up... on the handouts. I didn't feel like getting more) and put it outside my Algebra teacher's door. I also made a full-page version of the Pi Facts and taped it on my locker. Unfortunately, I didn't eat any pi[e] today... :(
I'm up to 3.14159265358979323... But I sent 3.1415...582097 in the message because that's where I folded the paper. I sent it to everyone in physics class (selected all the PHYSICS users :p ), the physics teacher (logged in in his room), my Honors Algebra II teacher, my Spanish III teacher (she is an avid pi fan :p, more later), the network admin (we're close friends), and a friend in Computer Applications I (read: typing class, although they do 1 Corel Presentation). I didn't have time to badger the office to get it put on the morning announcements or at 1:59... Didn't have time to in the morning because someone wanted a copy of the big "Happy [pi] Day!" sign and I forgot at lunch (well, I didn't want to go alone...).

My girlfriend prefers Mole Day to Pi Day. Damn BMEs.
In light of this, I am seriously reevaluating our relationship.
