TI Connect v1.2.1 and 73 Explorer
Posted by Michael on 6 March 2003, 01:07 GMT

TI Connect v1.2.1 has been released. The key update is that TI-GRAPH LINK now works with the black serial cable on Windows XP and 2000, through the use of a service.

Also, the TI-73 Explorer now lives. It's just a rename of the TI-73, but remember, more letters make it better!

It's not software, but a new calc.

I think that note was talking about TI Connect.
My problem with other connection softwares is that most connection softwares does not support COM5, which is the ONLY one I have on my computer. I have no idea why I do not have COM1~4, but rather COM5. So I cannot try a lot of the connection softwars.
Good thing is that at least TI Connect can find COM5. :]
But I would like to try TiLP, etc.

>>>"What the crap?"

I fell over laughing for some odd reason when I read that....

Even so, I doubt they really want to work that hard... they get lots of profit from what they have already.

This may sound completely stupid, but why would you want a calc that does less, when you could use a calc that does more, but just use it for less until you get into a higher math course? (This relates to the TI-73) I know about the fraction thing.... but STILL... I find it annoying, actually.

Well, you know how some people aren't too fast upstairs ...
On to a more serious note, do you know anybody that uses a 73? Maybe it's because I'm in high school, but it doesn't seem as if anybody uses the 73. I don't think I've even seen a picture of one. Why doesn't TI just make an 86+?

Last year in 8th grade, we had TI-82's and TI-73's. I used the 82 because it was better for programming, but even so, I got to "learn" about the 73. My mom also has one, but I don't use it too often.

They've got 73s at my school, but I think 8th graders get 83+s

Doe this mean that the keyboard works with the 68k line now?

Uh, I think the AMS 2.08 works with the keyboard, though I could be wrong.

No, you are correct. AMS 2.08 allows the use of the keyboard :)

Yay! A new TI-73! That's quite a surprise actually, considering the popularity of the 83 line of calculators. You'd think that they would be working on a TI-83 Pro or something :)

But it's the same thing! LOL The name shouldn't affect the calculator's popularity. Take "Voyage 200", for instance. All that did was confuse people. :)

God forbid ANOTHER 83!! They should be working on the 86+!! In my opinion, which might differ from that of many others, the 86 is superior to the 83+. The only thing about the 83+ that I like is the Flash memory.

Why release a TI-86+ when the TI-89:

- Already exists
- Is already much more advanced than the 86
- Has a sizable sotware library
- Has 3M of Flash already (2M for the OS, 1M for the user)

I know it's more advanced ... I just have an 86 (and have had one for 4 years now) and I just really like it. Besides, the 89 isn't always allowed on tests (in class), while the 86 is. I guess I'm just jealous that the 83+ gets more support from TI than does the 86 ...

The TI-89 isn't allowed on tests? You should sue! Well, not sue, but you should atleast ask them about their reasoning on that. It doesn't have the QWERTY keyboard. I'm glad I can use it... it's made my life SO much easier on the AMC-type tests.

Actually, I don't need to ask for their reasoning ... they already told it to us first day of school. It pretty much had something to do with the fact that the 89 can show radicals in exact form. But I didn't really care about not being able to us an 89 ... I've had my 86 since 7th grade (4.5 years now) and I don't think I'm ever going to use a different calculator (well, I might switch to 89, but only if I get to math that my 86 would die trying to do but the 89 would be able to survive).

Yeah, I know it can show radicals in exact form... whatever the 89 can do that the 83+ (or any other) can't, you could just write a program to integrate that feature...

Hey, what the ...? I got one of those "illegal operation" boxes on my screen, but I can still use the internet! That's really weird... Usually, it makes everything inoperable.

I don't see how the TI-89 is not allowed on standardized tests. The only restriction I have heard of is that no calculator can have a QWERTY keyboard. Maybe the AMS software makes the test too easy or something.

Then, use a LAPTOP! Most teachers wouldn't have a clue which calc a TI-89 was... and if you didn't show them, then it wouldn't matter. on education.ti.com, it says that they're allowed. They're discriminating against the TI-89! *cry* PREJUDISTS!

I didn't say it isn't allowed on standardized tests, did I? I just said tests in class (ie, for math class). But I'm pretty sure it was banned on some standardized test because of the AMS ... might have been for Academic Decathlon (before they banned ALL graphing calculators).

3 megabytes??? megabits??? Either way, you're wrong... In AMS 2.05 (the last GOOD one TI made), there are 5.63184 megabits (720,876 bytes) of flash available to the user, and 1.53817 megabits (196,886 bytes) of ROM.

In 2.08, there are 5.119859375 megabits (655,342 bytes) of flash available, and 1.49289 megabits (195,676) bytes of ROM available.
