TI Connect Software Released
Posted by Eric on 16 December 2001, 01:33 GMT

In what's probably the biggest announcement from TI in a while, the long-awaited TI Connect software has been released. TI Connect is the next generation link software that works with the TI-73, TI-83 Series, TI-89, and TI-92+. It has a new purty interface and makes data transferring much easier than before.

For some reason it seemed inevitable that this news item would appear...

Anyway, that's great. Now I can finally send/receive files to/from my calculators with my notebook computer with only USB ports (no serial), once I get a cable.

Just curious, has anyone tried getting one of those USB -> serial adapters and using it with the existing (serial) TI-GRAPH LINK? Does that work? If it does, I'll just get one of those instead of getting TI's (expensive) USB link.

I think it doesn't work that way, but I haven't tried it myself, I've just heard from others that it doesn't work.

Actually, you didn't need to wait. TiLP at http://tilp.sourceforge.net already supported the USB cable under Win32 for some time now.

USB -> serial is not an easy conversion by any means. It requires a powerful USB device to emulate RS-232, and then driver software to fake a new port (on Windows, it would be COM5 or something). The available products to do this might be different these days, but a couple of years ago there were only two options: 1) a Belkin box thing (required AC power!), or 2) an Entrega adapter. I have the Entrega (cost $70 at the time), which is about the size of a 25pin null-modem adapter, and pulls power from the USB line. Quite cool. But anyway, if you're trying to save money you're better off just buying the new TI cable.

Well, maybe I should just wait and go with a port replicator to simulate a serial port, because apparently TI Connect doesn't support all the calculators I own, so I'll have to use older software for some of my calcs. New technology is so expensive, though! It's cool, but the transition period to the new technology (to phase out the old stuff) really sucks.

Why don't you try TiLP? It does support older calculators with the USB cable, under both Win32 and Linux.

I just downloaded it and guess what? It saves your data on your calculator before you update the version! You no longer have to reload everything! Great Job TI!
