TI Connect Software Released
Posted by Eric on 16 December 2001, 01:33 GMT
In what's probably the biggest announcement from TI in a while, the long-awaited TI Connect software has been released. TI Connect is the next generation link software that works with the TI-73, TI-83 Series, TI-89, and TI-92+. It has a new purty interface and makes data transferring much easier than before.

Actually, it does _not_ work with every graphing calc.

It will have the 86's features when it does not have a crap menu system, a crap OS, has more than a paltry 16k RAM, a decent sized screen, a display that does not suck, unit conversions, calculus functions, and a whole host of other features that the 82 line simply does not have, and cannot have, unless the whole OS is redesigned. But then you'd end up with an 85 or 86, so why bother? Keep it simple and easy to use, like it was designed, and leave the real calculator alone. Why can't you have two product lines that compete with each other? TI has a monopoly on graphing calculators already. What is wrong with offering a choice to users? I see no reason to discontinue the 86 series. From what I have seen, the 82 line was more geared for high school students that don't really care about math or physics, and the 85 was geared towards more advanced high school students and college students. Granted, the 85 came out first, but the 82 came out later as a simpler, less featureful calculator. They have added on worthless crap to the 82 line, while ignoring their better calculator line. It doesn't matter how much superficial junk you hadd to the 83. Eventually, you'd end up with an 86.

Re: Re: Silent Linking

I'm sorry, but I use what I use and I have what I have. I use Fastlink v1.3 and I have an 86. This is from Fastlinks readme file:
"Silent Link Capability
----------------------
FastLink supports "Silent linking" on the TI-83, 83+, 86, 89, 92 and 92+, but
you have the option of whether or not to use it. In order to enable or disable
silent linking for either receiving or transmitting, check or uncheck
the menu items in the Link menu.
By default, silent linking is enabled for receiving, but not
transmitting. This is because transmission is significantly slower
in silent mode.
Some functions on the TI-89, 92 and 92+ can only be accessed with silent linking.
For these functions, silent linking does not need to be enabled."
So if it can be done here, why can't TI get it done???

"TI 86 doesn’t have silent linking capability"...
Silent linking capability, that's where you plug the calc into your PC and don't have to do anything to make it link, just turn it on, right?
I may be hallucinating, but not only does the 86 have silent linking capability, it also has graphlink software that uses this "silent linking", or at least I have software from TI that does this. I assume you do not own an 86, and would appreciate it greatly if you would go out and buy one, it would serve 2 purposes.
1. You would no longer make an ass of yourself in discussions of the 86
2. If 86 sales continue, perhaps TI will have to continue support for it.
Thank you for your time, and maybe you can still learn from your mistake.

Well now that's an awful roundabout way to do things... You mean that they've been developing this "super" link program for close to a year now (since it was first public, who knows how long before that), and they actually made the link system WORSE, and LESS intuitive than the old graphlink software?
Thank heavens that I still have the installs for 86 and 89 graphlink software on my HD, this new program sounds like a piece of manure, even if they do eventually add 86 support (doubtful).
I have an 86, I have an 89, I have ticalc.org, and I have my own backup of drugwars (why'd that game get removed anyway, it was a classic...), TI is going down the crapper, but I have all that I need from them, hope the new program turns out well for ya folks, but I'm gonna pass, on this, and on anything TI makes unless somebody wises up and makes an 86+.

Oops, forgot two things I needed to say, the first is to the site administrators, and the second is to all 86 fans.
1st. You need to fix an incompatibility between your news post system and Internet Explorer 6. I have been trying to post for a while and kept getting a not logged in error, I assumed something to the effect of my account being disabled because I cursed a few times in the past, but I never even got a warning e-mail or anything, but today I posted from my old computer and look, it's here.
2nd. Rather that whine about the 86 being treated unfairly and how much we hate the 83 whenever we see something good for it, why don't we all e-mail TI and ask for an 86+, at least once a week, They need to see that there is a large market for such a calc, then maybe they'll reconsider. Maybe they won't, but 5 minutes a week writing an e-mail is a small cost for even a chance of success. Now, my fellow 86 fans, GO FORTH AND WRITE SOME SPAM!!!

I don't know if it TI connect will run on XP or not. I can't see why it wouldn't though, just put it on compatibilty mode.
I have XP (but I don't want to download TI connect) and it's not slow, and you can change the taskbar. Bloated, maybe, but then again it's nothing like WinME!!
About that taskbar. You don't like it? Well, do you like your standard taskbar? Fine, you can change every aspect of the XP taskbar to look and act EXACTLY the same as the win9X series. In fact, the guest account on my computer uses such a setup. I personally didn't like that blue bar too much either, so mine is the other color choice for the XP style bar-silver.
