Mega Man for the 86
Posted by Nick B. on 19 August 2001, 18:50 GMT

After nearly two years of work, Cullen Sauls has released a little game called "Mega Man" for the TI-86. The game is based upon Mega Man 2 for the old-school Nintendo, wherein you try to defeat the evil Dr. Wily and the eight robots he has created to stop you. The game features two levels of difficulty which you can determine by only having certain files on the calculator at one time, as well as an option for sound.

I've been with Cullen for half of this process over at the Macross 2000 message boards and I have to say that he put many, many hours into this game. He just wants everybody to enjoy it. I love this game!

You really _don't_ want to use the TI-86 menus, unless you have to (say to modify a system menu). It is much shorter and easier to write your own routines to draw a menu. There are several menu routines available for use. Check in the routines section on ticalc.org. For info on system menus, see the following site:

Wow this game is very well done. Finally a Mario beater!
Huge sprites, greyscale and scrolling. Awesome work Cullen!

The Ti86 sure has the best games out of any calc.

72k? Oh, never thought of that. Dang. Hey, they could split it up into 3 sections of 24k... or maybe not.

And it's grayscale, which isn't possible on a TI-82.

There are grayscale games for the 82. Um... there's a donkey kong game that has grayscale in it at the begginning. It really flickers, but it's still grayscale.

I have MANY calcs and I must agree that the 86 has MUCH better games than any of the others that I own. It EASILY beats my 83, 83+, and my much loved 92+(still the best of any calc). I think it just that 86 programmers are above the 83+ programmers, but don't have a shortcut(aka c++(tigcc is stil the best).

I'm not dissing any 83+ asm programmers. I admire anyone that can program assemby(I barely know x86 asm).

I've programmed ASM for the 83, the 86, and the 92+. My favorite is easily the 86. It is relatively straight forward with lots of documentation. The 83 was a bit harder to work with (in my opinion). The 92+ was also harder, mainly due to incompatibilities and the requirements for shells/libraries (C makes it so much easier, though).

Anyway, MegaMan was the first game I've downloaded in a long time. It's very well done.

Yeah, Cullen wanted to make it as close to the original Mega Man 2 as possible.

So do I! Personally I don't like new consoles such as PSX, PS2, DC or N64 since PC beats them at no time. Though I love the old consoles (probably because they're out of production) and I have lot's of roms on my comp (I have quiet many Genesis carts too). Also, I still have SEGA Genesis and 3DO (my NES broke down many years ago and I was unable to fix it). Does anyone else has similar preferences?

I agree, the classics were very good games. This new Megaman 2 proves how timeless games can be; but, really, how can Street Fighter I be compared to Soul Calibur 2 or Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy XI (not released yet)? I think the new games are the best. They have evolved from the old times of Atari, Colecovision, and NES. Players can even relate more emotionally to the game just because of how real their experiences can be. The new Luigi's Mansion for Gamecube uses accurate lighting effects to simulate shadows and curved mirrors. Who here can argue that videogames have plainly just gotten better over the years? With the highly experienced team at Nintendo (including Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario, Link, and now Pikmin, to name a few), the new Gamecube will be a top contender in the console wars. Unless you get a PC and put an additional $2,000.00 or more into it worth of 3d accelerators, you're probably not going to get the graphics and framerates of the new consoles on your new computer (unless you're like Bill Gates, who probably has Star Trek technology by now). By the way, Mega Man 86 is pretty fun and it hasn't crashed yet. That's a real plus. <<<<<]:::::::::::::::>

Well, technically, you can't compare Final Fantasy I and XI. I was an RPG, XI is a MMORPG :)

Ok, thanks. The only semi-related games I have are Diablo, Diablo 2, and Starcraft (which isn't an RPG at all).

although i don't really play w/ game consoles anymore unless i'm on a long road trip, i still have: Sega (ya that's right, just Sega), Genesis, Sega CD, nintendo, super nintendo, N64, gameboys, gamegears, TI-89!!!, PS1, (and if i win the TI developement U-16 contest i'll have a PS2![unlikely])... and i used to have a missile command arcade. i would have to say that the better games came earlier w/ Sega and NES... all the games with like N64 and PS are gay for some reason.. they're just not as simple as they used to be... for example, i like Zelda: A link to the past for SNES better than i like Zelda: Ocarina of time (or whatever it's called) for N64 (and i'm sure anyone who's beat both of them would agree).

I had one but I sold it to a friend about 7 or 8 years ago when I got a Genesis. I had around half a dozen Colecovision games and about a dozen Atari 2600 games which it could also play. I've kicked myself a lot for selling it, you can be sure. :(
