Network Outage
Posted by Magnus on 7 July 2001, 14:56 GMT

As many of you probably noticed, ticalc.org was hit with a network outage friday evening. Due to the bad timing of this (being a late friday evening, and also the time when the only person who could really get to things to check what was wrong (me) was on a flight home from TechEd in Barcelona), the network outage lasted for 15-16 hours. It has now been fixed.

The problem was in the access router from Telia through which all the internet traffic goes.

Wasn't the internet first designed so theat if any one part of it was destroyed, broken, whatever, it would still work with no problems?

applauds at the raw ignorance....

Telia is their provider. who cares if the whole internet is up, if they can't see it, we can't see them.

No. It was designed so that if one part of it was broken, damaged, or destroyed, the rest would not be affected. However, that part is still broken, damaged, or destroyed.

Yes, that was one of the goals of the original design. But now the internet is probably far, far different now than what any of the creators imagined. The internet runs over TCP/IP, which is a routable protocol. Thus, assuming there is a route between two points, it is possible for data to travel between the two points. However, routing data is not dynamically updated in manner that makes it possible to automatically compensate for the loss of core routers. In almost all cases it takes manual intervention to change routing to compensate.

This is irrelevant to this case anyway. The ticalc.org web server only has a single connection to the internet, and the router, which provides it's single route to the internet was down.

Think of it like roads. If an intersection is blocked, say due to a traffic accident, then most likely traffic can continue by taking a different route. Now if someone goes and parks a large truck in front of your driveway that completely blocks you in, it doesn't matter about the rest of the roads. You're out of luck.

On the contrary, routing is most definitly updated dynamically. Inside a network, OSPF is often used (there are others, but OSPF is most common). Between networks, BGP4 is usually used. It is not instant, but it's pretty fast, and it does not require any manual intervention.

The other point is very valid though - since we have only a single connection, there is no backup route to use when that one goes down.

There is the little problem of redundant links everywhere being very expensive, which is why it's not used all that much for smaller sites. But it's definitly possible with todays routing protocols.

Actually the problem was with the DDoS attack directed against the router...Sorry, just had to do it. This site pisses me off, you guys have some stupid rules if you ask me. Hows the swearing rule? What the fuck is that all about. No swearing? Jesus, this is the fucking internet. Don't let these assholes control you kiddiez, just get out and get some sunshine. Jeez, thats some powerful shit, but why the fuck would any god damn person wanna censor mother fuckers like us?, I think that they shoudl stop censoring us and censor those buttfuckin' teletubbies, they are the ones that put bad ideas into kids fuckin heads.

I think the censorship is less a matter of little kids, and more a matter of keeping the forums mature. Considering that most of the frequenters of this site are high schoolers and jr. high, If thre weren't some kind of censorship then when anything went wrong or poorly, the message boards would contain at least 4 pages of fuck this, those damn motherfuckers, worthless fucking piece of shit, etc.. and while expletives can add color and meaning to a phrase, whne they are used to whine/complain/bitch about something, it gets old fast

NO! NO! NO! DO NOT DO THIS!
Hit left+right+2nd+on, and it will reset WITHOUT ERASING YOUR MEMORY. If that doesn't work, take a battery out, wait five minutes, put it back in. If THAT doesn't work, take a battery out and put it back in while holding left+right+2nd+on. NEVER do the - + ) thing! It even erases your archive and can permanently damage your memory if done too often.

Yeah, umm...right. I believe you, really.

Seriously, if you were capable of launching a DoS, let alone a DDoS, you would be dumb enough to brag about it. That's a fucking criminal offense man, anyone who wastes the time to spead a worm that does a DDoS targets some major thing, like yahoo or ebay

Actually, he could put you in jail. The false reporting of a felony is in itself a felony. A girl at my school was arrested for saying she was going to bring guns to school. The situation is, essentially, the same. A threat of some action that would cause many people harm is regarded as a felony.

If you're mentally ill, you'll be sent to a mental institution instead of jail. Except you only get a psychological evaluation instead of a trial.

The swearing rule exists mainly because there are people of all ages here. I personally know an eight-year-old who uses this site. Thank you for being a moron. May you get what's coming to you (the business end of a Mack truck).

In response to your stupid questions:

>1. why the hell does 8 yr old have access to a computer

I had access to a computer when I was 4. It's called the information age for a reason. Information is readily accessible to anyone.

>2. why is he at this site

Ummm... maybe because he programs or wants games? I first programmed in BASIC when I was 8. There's nothing wrong with an 8-year-old being here. Maybe a porn site, sure, but not here. This site is *supposed* to be wholesome.

>3. i dont believe you

You must be a very paranoid person if you don't believe anyone.

>4. no.

I won't even go there. That's not a question.
