Network Outage

As many of you probably noticed, ticalc.org was hit with a network outage friday evening. Due to the bad timing of this (being a late friday evening, and also the time when the only person who could really get to things to check what was wrong (me) was on a flight home from TechEd in Barcelona), the network outage lasted for 15-16 hours. It has now been fixed. The problem was in the access router from Telia through which all the internet traffic goes.

Wasn't the internet first designed so theat if any one part of it was destroyed, broken, whatever, it would still work with no problems?

Yes, that was one of the goals of the original design. But now the internet is probably far, far different now than what any of the creators imagined. The internet runs over TCP/IP, which is a routable protocol. Thus, assuming there is a route between two points, it is possible for data to travel between the two points. However, routing data is not dynamically updated in manner that makes it possible to automatically compensate for the loss of core routers. In almost all cases it takes manual intervention to change routing to compensate.
This is irrelevant to this case anyway. The ticalc.org web server only has a single connection to the internet, and the router, which provides it's single route to the internet was down.
Think of it like roads. If an intersection is blocked, say due to a traffic accident, then most likely traffic can continue by taking a different route. Now if someone goes and parks a large truck in front of your driveway that completely blocks you in, it doesn't matter about the rest of the roads. You're out of luck.
