Flash Drives on a Calculator
Posted by Michael on 12 September 2006, 04:43 GMT

[I have mass storage devices on a mass storing calculator!]As the result of a group effort between myself, Brandon Wilson, and Dan Englender, we have released msd8x v0.94, which allows the use of ordinary USB flash drives with a TI-84 Plus. Brandon has been laboring all summer long on finishing the driver and GUI to be acceptable for public usage, and thanks to his dedication and adding of nifty features it is at last at the stage for a general release. Information on downloading and running msd8x can be found at the WikiTI calculator wiki.

With the appropriate cable, you can browse, modify, and copy (in both directions) files between a flash drive and the 84+'s RAM and/or archive. msd8x also supports the running of ION and MirageOS programs directly from a flash drive.

Here's the old news article...here's a quote from someone about a 89T version
I don't know if it's still true but I wouldn't mind seeing one...

Yes, I am, but I need to find time for this.

By the way thanks again Dan for you adapter cable, my USB mouse worked on the Titanium a few days after I had received it.

I am currently attempting to get a 68K cross compiler to work (& also uClinux). If I can manage (famous last words, right?), I will port Linux to the TI-89 Titanium (& *maybe* the other 68K calcs, or I might just leave that up to someone else) this semester.

Umm...oh...my point is, I would love for it to support the USB port on the TI-89 Titanium, but I have no idea how the calc's port works. Also, I doubt any emulators currently support it well enough for debugging purposes, so I shall have to get an on-calc shell up first.

I am not sure, but it should be possible to use many (if not most) small USB drivers without modification once the kernel port & the main USB interface is set up.

If the comments on Slashdot are any indication, no one there cares about this or has a need to look at ticalc.org for more information.

Hey, I got here from the link on /. and I read the tree root to leaves and all the braches between.

Then again I'd much rather be considered a ticalc guy than a /. guy.

This could depend on a number of different things, such as drawing too much current (which my SD card reader does).

To respond to the other post, you MUST use the cable in the article or something similar to it. Hubs and other hookups don't work.

Is there a way that I can supply power to My SD card reader and connect it to my calculator at the same time so that it doesn't rely on the calculator for power?

This is up for debate right now. There's a power schematic you can try to build at sf.net/projects/usb8x in the forum.

Is it possible to have the program work so you can use the USB cable you get with the TI-83+ SE, with a male to female converter, to be able to use a Flash Drive for the TI-83+'s. Just thinking/ hoping.

No, the 83+/SEs have no USB controllers. The SilverLink cable connects to the serial I/O port. They're nothing alike.

sorry, I meant the TI-Graph Link, it seems to me like it could work, just wondering if it would work, I think it would take much, or any, difference in the program.

The SilverLink cable IS a TI-Graph Link cable. No, this can't work at all. You're talking about two completely different ports.

Yeah, I know, that's the TI-Graph Link SilverLink cable. That's just what we call it. This cable connects to the SERIAL I/O port on your calculator. It's not a USB port. You can't "make it" a USB port. It's impossible. The 83+/SEs do not have USB ports, and you cannot add any to it.

what if you take the cable that found in 84/89ti @
(see URL/webpage) and attached a female USB at the end by splicing or something like that. i dont know the proper terminology, sorry. if this is possible then I will perhaps wait until a 89ti v. comes out.

It's been stated many times on this page that using that cable and changing the end to A female will not work. The reason why is that it doesn't supply any power to the peripheral (the flash drive). It is possible to splice cables together to make the correct one, but I don't have any information on that.

I have sucessfully made a splice. simply tade the 84 to 84 link. cut off the usb-mini a end. then take any usb extender cabble and cut off the female end. then strip the outer covering, discard the covering and the silver shielding. then strip each of the four wires. attactch the red wire to the red wire and so on. I sodered(sp?) the wires together. I recomend puting heat shrink tubing around each wire and around the whole thing.

I'd have to assume so, otherwise it wouldn't be successful. :)

Yes, this method works...anything involving a mini-A male plug and an A female plug will work, as long as you've wired it correctly.
