ticalc.org Celebrates Ten Year Anniversary
Posted by Michael on 21 June 2006, 00:35 GMT
On June 21, 1996, ticalc.org was unveiled to the public. That was exactly ten years ago, and now on June 21, 2006, we are pleased and amazed to celebrate ten years of operation! It is astonishing to imagine that this site could exist for an entire decade. It is only with the fantastic support of our visitors, the many programmers, TI calculator users, students, and teachers worldwide that our continued existence is possible. Without your support, we would have never reached this amazing milestone. Also, we must remember all of our current and past staff who have worked so hard and diligently to create and maintain ticalc.org over the years.
Special thanks also goes to Texas Instruments. Without the creation and continued development of their graphing calculator products, this website would not be possible.
We look forward to another decade of serving the TI calculator community and hope that it is as fantastic and enriching as this past one has been!

I think ticalc.org should re-structure the layout of everything. Not the databases and stuff, but what the client sees. Some pages are out-of-date and need updating (cough howtodumparomfroman83+ cough) and maybe a more welcoming feel, everything seems really hard-edged. And this huge mass of red text above the reply box could be removed... put it in a small link at the bottom or when you register or something, just every time you go to post something...

Oh no, it's the Windows XP effect! Soon there'll be 'task lists' on the side asking 'What do you want to do?', with options for 'Read news', 'Vote in a survey', 'Get games for my calculator', etc. Maybe an assistant too to help you around the site (not the paperclip again!).
Seriously, though, IMO the site's really easy to use. Some sections need to be updated, but in general everything is well-organized and uncluttered, and most people probably find it easy to navigate.

Show of hands, who here remembers the 5th anniversary?
...the second?
Anyhow, I'm happy to see the site still doing so well. This community was the first I had a part of on the Internet, back when I got my first computer in 97 or 98. In fact, I can probably trace my current position as a grad student in computer engineering back to my interest in programming calculators, which had a lot to do with this site. So in short, thanks to the founders and staff of the site, ten years is a marathon when it comes to sites like this.
Also of note, my TI-81 port of the RNG functions to this day, and still helps me do my taxes every April.
