ticalc.org Celebrates Ten Year Anniversary
Posted by Michael on 21 June 2006, 00:35 GMT

On June 21, 1996, ticalc.org was unveiled to the public. That was exactly ten years ago, and now on June 21, 2006, we are pleased and amazed to celebrate ten years of operation! It is astonishing to imagine that this site could exist for an entire decade. It is only with the fantastic support of our visitors, the many programmers, TI calculator users, students, and teachers worldwide that our continued existence is possible. Without your support, we would have never reached this amazing milestone. Also, we must remember all of our current and past staff who have worked so hard and diligently to create and maintain ticalc.org over the years.

Special thanks also goes to Texas Instruments. Without the creation and continued development of their graphing calculator products, this website would not be possible.

We look forward to another decade of serving the TI calculator community and hope that it is as fantastic and enriching as this past one has been!

Happy Anniversary.

Actually, I don't think Texas Instruments even deserves acknowledgement. Their graphing calculator development has stagnated over much of the ten years, and I think development and projects would have gone within the graphing calculator community with only a few models around.

Ticalc.org has stagnated itself the past years, too. There have been two new articles in the past six years, file uploads have not been as innovative or as well-designed as they may have been even a few years ago, and Michael and the rest of the staff sometimes even forget there's a post button. Perhaps ticalc.org needs to sponsor a project or contest to get this community revitalized, just like Google's Summer of Code is supposed to accomplish. In fact, this is the perfect time to start.

There's hope yet. Here's to ticalc.org's next ten.

Hey, the Summer of Code does sponsor a few calculator projects. :-) There's my KTIGCC, there's a project to write a diff equation grapher for the 83+/84+ series and there's a project to support Bluetooth on the 84+ through USB Bluetooth adapters. All thanks to Detached Solutions who are mentoring us. They are also mentoring a project to write a scientific calculator for Pocket PCs.

Hmm. That WOULD be a nice thing to try and implement... But is it viable?

But what about the 68k calculators? There's so much on the 68k calculators that could be done but haven't...

If someone donates the resources to us to hold such a thing, I'm sure we'd be interested in doing it. But you need to remember that ticalc.org has zero income, and is all based on volounteer work, so we can't really pull something like that on our own.

As for ticalc.org having stagnated - yes, I definitly agree in some way. Some would say it's because "the site is complete", but that's definitly not so. We've reached a point where we can definitly live "status quo" without too much work, but you are correct in that there could be more innovative stuff happening. So if you have any specific ideas, those are always welcome!

as I have pointed out many a time, the profile pages are outdated. Add all the calc models and cables. And despite initial enthusiasm from jon, he still hasn't heard from any of you other staff in regards to finally implementing the summer archive project.

I'll take the chance here to say a huge thank you to all the members of our staff that have kept with us through the years - the oldtimers, those retired now, and of course also those currently keeping the site up day-to-day. Great job, all of you!

That's actually because they started up the account system late in the evening US time - so Magnus was asleep, and I got the jump on him ;)
