January/February/March Newsletter Released
Posted by Michael on 1 April 2006, 03:39 GMT

Having run out of suitable adjectives to describe our newsletter editor, I will simply say that "lazy bum Jon" has finally published the ticalc.org newsletter for January - March. To add to his humiliation, he wrote "an open-source Windows emulator on Linux" instead of "an open-source program that allows you to execute Windows programs on Linux." Open source fanatics: Attack!

What is it everyone got fooled by the April Fools day prank?

Emulators can be useful. They can also be a huge nuisance to set up. Ever since I wrote a review for VTI I've been helping people set up both that and Tilem.

Agreed. I wonder ... did everyone think that ticalc.org was taken over by some domain thief?

Haha! Good one! I look forward to the Ticalc April Fool's prank every year. Having been around for 4-5 years now, it didn't trick me, but then again, I came here today with the expectation of a prank.

And by the way, it does look real... good job with that.

I was freaking out for about 45 seconds...actually, I initially thought someone had hijacked my DNS service. :D

I came here looking for the April Fool's Day prank. When I saw the links page I figured I had mistyped the address, so I suppose it fooled me. :) After I pointed at a few links & found that they linked to http://www.ticalc.org/index.htm, I figured out what they did.

You mean the links on the april fools page pointed to ticalc.org/index.htm? When I'm looking at it now, they all (except for Random Numbar Generator) link to pages that are actually related to the name of the link.
@Staff: nice work!

When I first came, none of the links pointed to /index.html!

No, just the Random Numbar Generator pointed to index.htm. The others pointed to ti.com & ticalc.org variously. Sorry.

Gotta admit, they fooled me for about ten seconds. :S At first I thought someone had forgotten to renew the ticalc.org domain (just like what happened to detacheds.com a while back). However, looking a second time made me realize it was a prank. Which just goes to show that I don't even read pages that match that particular format. ;)
The worst thing is that just five minutes before I went to ticalc.org I was thinking about how no april fools jokes had been made yet today...

yeah they got me; i couldn't believe that the ti staff would actually advertise hp calcs, so i figured they really forgot to pay their dues, then i checked the links and noticed the articles for voyage 400 were april 1st, too, and it all fell in place.

tricky, tricky :`D

I wasn't here yesterday, so I didn't see it. :-( (I was taking the #@%^@ SAT...) It sounds like there was a fake 'expired domain' page?

IS A LINK TO THE REAL PAGE AT THE BOTTOM TOO MUCH TO ASK???

I'm glad that Google still hadn't updated their copies so I could find what I was looking for. Google and archive.org are the greatest.

so? write a script so that the page that loads depends on the local system time. it could automatically load at 00:00:00.0 and revert at 23:59:59.9

or go by only eastern time...or convince everyone to convert to greenwich mean time...

That, and, April Fool's Day starts at midnight UTC, not midnight local time.
