F-ZERO for 68k Calcs
Posted by Michael on 10 December 2005, 20:48 GMT
Lionel Anton has released F-ZERO for TI68k. F-ZERO is a racing game based upon the original F-ZERO by Nintendo. It features four different ships and several different modes: Racing against calculator opponents, racing against your own previous times, or racing against a friend on a second calculator. This is a very amazing looking game that everyone with an 89, 89 Titanium, 92+, or V200 should download.

Great game! You really did a great job. It really feels like f-zero and that's quite an achievement. I've uploaded some records to your site, but while they do show up, there isn't a download link yet. Does it have to validated first before you can download it? Anyway, thanx for the great game! :)

Contratulations, Lionel! I thought the engine on its own was great, but this game is definitely a marvel. Great job!

Sorry for interrupting the pages and pages of compliments, but:
1. Am I the only one who thinks the "Enter your name" UI is retarded? I mean come on, selecting letters with the cursor keys is acceptable on a console which doesn't have more keys, but on a calculator with dozens of keys? Why can't we enter letters normally? And you can't even press ESC to give up and go back to the home screen at that point. The name being limited to 6 characters is also annoying (even if mine and the author's happen to fit).
2. Am I the only one who can't drive around those non-rounded 90° corners without crashing the car into them, leading me to 100% damage very quickly?
3. Am I the only one who thinks the game takes way too much memory? Hundreds of KBs of archive and almost the entire RAM are very memory hungry for my taste. Many games can do with much less. (For example, Ice Hockey 68k can fit entirely in RAM, I tried running it entirely unarchived and it worked.)
4. Am I the only one who thinks it's hard to see anything? The track (especially the borders) and all the cars overlap on the screen due to the perspective, and have very limited contrast because a lot of stuff is in one of 2 shades of gray. (Note that I tried the game on TiEmu because of its insane memory requirements, see 3. So I'm not sure how it looks like on a real calculator LCD.)

Very nice work. Definately a keeper.
multiplayer: both of us get a screen that tells us that we placed first
small problem: on some maps sometimes when I'm rounding a curve, I get a "Reverse" message even though I'm going the right direction?

Yea, I get the REVERSE message too at times. Its not really all that big a deal, since it goes away almost immediately (for me at least), unless of course I am going in reverse ;)
I must say though, this game is an awesome display of what a calculator can do, even if it is massive in size. I have the Titanium, so the amount of archive taken up isn't all that big a deal...Especially since I have my calc set up right now so I can play Corridor 99 whenever, I just have to change folders.
Keep up the great work, this one's my vote for POTY, even if it was a bit late for this year, I'll remember it for next:)
