Astrosmash v0.90 Released
Posted by Michael on 2 May 2005, 05:33 GMT

[Astrosmash]Dave Randall, author of International Karate, has created a remake of a classic videogame. Astrosmash was originally created in 1981 for the Intellivision console. This version for the 89 features the same play as the original: Defend your laser battery from attacking aliens, meteors, and missiles. The original game was extremely addictive, and this calculator version should be no different.

Intellivision Emulation?
Ranman  Account Info

Has anyody other than me thought about creating an Intellivision or Atari 2600 emulator for our calcs? MastaZog (Ben Ingram) has proven GameBoy emulation is possible. Applause noted! I am sure we can do the same with these 2 classic systems. I would be willing to help.

The Intellivision IV uses a 68K processer.

Yep. Unfortunately the Intellivision IV never saw daylight. The original Intellivision uses a CP1610 processor.

I remember the old days of Arari. A friend of mine had one. The select button had broken off and the only way to use it was to jam a screwdriver into the hole where it used to be, lol. We played a lot of Pong and Combat. I happen to have an emu for it and 81 games, including a few rare ones. Just say the word and I'll mail out a .zip full.

The next version of Astrosmash will include: load/save game, an "About" screen, along with the source code. Maybe even a sneak peek at Ultima V.

Does it also have the Asteroids-clone easter egg and garbled scores?

No and no. I opted not to include the garbled peak score easter egg (actually a bug). However, I may put the Asteroid (true) easter egg in. Good idea!

I have one of those all-in-one game controller devices that plugs into a TV for instant gameplay, and it has this game on it. It looks like a decent port! Good Job!

Thanks. I have an original Intellivision and a 10-in-1 Intellivision Direct2Tv hand controller. Personally, I do not like the Astrosmash remake on the Direct2TV hand controller.

What is your Peak Score?
Ranman  Account Info

My peak score is 88450. At one point I had 29 bases.

On a side note... On the original Intellivision my peak score was around 583000 with 165 bases at one point. Things can go down hill so quickly.

INTV > 2600 :-)

Astrosmash used to be my single most favourite game. Heh, I was so young at the time, I had to get my parents to change the cartridge if I wanted to play Lock 'N' Chase.

Me too. I love Lock-n-Chase. And, probably the most original game of all time... Microsurgeon. What an awesome game traveling through the human body; killing diseases, bacteria, cancer, tumors, etc.

I never had Astrosmash, but I did have Lock and Chase. That would be a great port of an intellivision game IMO.

You should probably make the save file external, so that we can archive the game... I thought mine was buggy until I realized that it wouldn't save unless it was unarchived.

Either that, or try and do whatever phoenix does to be able to save a game in there while still archived (my guess is that it momentarily unarchives the file, changes what's necessary, then archives it again if it was archived before).

You have a point. But, FLASH memory has a maximum number of write cycles that can be performed. Does someone know what that max number is?

About 100K cycles, you don't therefore have to worry about it.
Having a battery leak is much more likely than wearing the Flash out: I've never heard of a calculator whose Flash doesn't work anymore, but I've heard of calculators being unused for too long, whose batteries leaked.

100K... Wow! I did not think it was that high. In that case, I may use the above idea.
