File Invitation System Announced
Posted by Michael on 1 April 2005, 05:46 GMT

We will be moving within the next month to an invitation-only system for all BASIC programs in our archives. This will involve several stages. All BASIC programs will be removed from our archives. Backups will be kept and will be available upon request for authors who don't have a copy of their work. Now don't panic about your quadratic solvers just yet - you will be able to upload your programs back into our archives. The difference is that from now on an invitation code will be required to do so.

Each author in our archives will be given invitation codes, one per each ASM program. The assembly authors can then select BASIC programs to approve from a list of pending potential files. When an author is out of codes, that's it. This will accomplish two things: The number of BASIC programs and assembly programs will be at most a 1:1 ratio. This should clean up the quality of our BASIC programs and ensure only the innovative and well-written programs are in our archives. Second, we hope this will increase the number of program reviews as authors will be inspecting all of the BASIC programs closely. In the case of older programs where the original authors may no longer be active, we will be manually reviewing those programs and will put them into the approval queue as needed.

Before we finalize this drastic change, we are soliciting comments about the idea. Please post in this news article with any suggestions. In the interim, BASIC programmers can e-mail basic-invite@ticalc.org to request that when we purge the archives, their programs be automatically placed in a potential queue to be re-added. Please put, and only put the file id of your program in the subject line (one per e-mail). The content of the body does not matter. You can find the id of your files by the number in the URL of their file information pages (e.g. "12345.html").

I understand that many BASIC programmers are going to have misgivings about this, but please try to keep an open mind and realize that in the long run, our archives will be more relevant to visitors.

They're going to have to hire a lot of extra staff to review all the files of authors who have left the community...

*wonders if they will make screenshots of the files while they are at it*

Although I have a few BASIC programs in there, I think it's a good change. However, I wouldn't just get rid of all the other BASIC programs unless you were short on server space. Why not create a seperate BASIC file browsing place? Some programmers only host their files on ticalc.org, thanks to the download statistics, information, review, and search system, and a place to host it anyway. It also lets them keep all their programs together in one place.

And what about ASM? There are some not-so-good ASM programs out there. What happens if you get people flooding the ASM program section with "Hello World" programs just so they can get their BASIC programs on there?
So, I think it's a good idea, but perhaps you should think about merely storing all the BASIC programs somewhere else, while also implementing the invite-only system.

If it was true, I agree that the assembly programs would need to be reviewed too (there are still some really bad ones).

Whether it's a joke or not, it's a really good idea.

I'm waiting for a directory: TI-83/84 Plus BASIC Shells. Many BASIC-shells are now stored in Miscellaneous programs, so it's hard to find all BASIC-shells together.

Err. removing the files is a bad April fool's joke and a very bad idea. But restructuring all archives isn't that bad...

A way to decrease the size of the archives without decreasing the content would be to require mandatory maximum compression on the zip files. Many files I've seen are in zip format but have no compression or 5-6% compression.

Some people dont have a computer at home and have to use admin protected school computers and most of the time crap installed on school computer so they have to work with crap so they cannot compress as much as WinRAR does

Its shareware, it bugs you to buy the paid version, much like WinZip, but you dont have to buy it I think. I dunno the URL though...

I use IZarc and 7-zip

WinRAR is only for Windows platforms, but the normal RAR is for Linux based platforms and Dos. Beside these there's a PocketRAR, for pocket-pcs.

It's not free, it's shareware!

It isn't s much the admin problem as the fact that all computers at schools tend to be in places where a teacher is likely to come over and notice what you're up to before you can hack in.

These so called shells don't even work half the time. I would load them into VTI, and follow direction, and VTI would calc crash. I think it may not be the BASIC prgraming but the ASM libs they use.

I'm assuming you have a 84PSE. I do too and vti doesn't support our ROMs anyway. VTI 3.0 Alpha supposedly does but that doesn't run at all on any computer I've ever seen.

Not me. Some of them have pretty impressive graphics but I find no use of them. In basic the most useful shell would be one using program tools to show a list of programs and flash gordon to run them (even if they are archived), but still I would not use them anyway.

I liked to mess around with MirageOS 1.1 and Omnicalc 1.23 or lower to do some funny stuff with them (I can display a Blue screen of Death during 5 minutes without damaging my TI-83+SE LCD), but those are pure ASM

What do BASIC shells do anyway??? Why would anybody waste space on a BASIC prog that tells you what other BASIC progs you have???

So far I think the best idea would be to separate the BASIC misc programs into separate directories, like Shells, tools (like agenda, notepad-like program) and the ASM tools to enhance basic propgrams should be put with the others in the ASM misc programs section (I dunno what are they doing in the BASIC section if they are in ASM)

May be in a major update. For example TI-83 Plus OS v2.00, with a directory structure... WOW! It would be amazing...

And then all those DOS command prompts REALLY work hehehe...

I only see DOS prompts, but never BASH... Why???
