The Return of the Voxels
Posted by Michael on 8 September 2004, 04:33 GMT

[Voxel demo] The second version of the make-you-drool graphics voxel demo has been released, now utilizing the improved "V2-Engine." Those of you who missed the original article will want to look at the original file to see the improvements. There also is now the VX.Studio, an on-calc tool to create voxel landscapes on the 89/92+/V200. I'm still not sure if it has reached the point of practical applications yet, but eye candy will always have a niche. If nothing else, impress your friends at school.

Thats cool. But what is the purpose. Will there ever be a purpose?

Why does there need to be a purpose?! It's voxels, and voxels are cool, darnit!

We don't need no steenkin' purpose! :P

How do I get the Studio to run? It says to archive everything but I already have.

i need more informations.

what AMS do you use? what flash software is installed? is a kernel installed or are other programs running in the background? have you tried to start VX.Studio directly from the home screen, without a shell like tict-explorer?

to find out what's going on, i'd suggest you to make
a backup of the whole memory and to perform a hard reset. then you can install/copy one prog after another back again to find out what's interferring with VX.Studio.

Let me know what it was!

Where did you get the screenshots from? They look neater than the game. Read comment above.

good question!

because vti cannot display 8 grayscales at exactly the same time i used a not very nice method:
a digital camera and a monitor!

i set the camera on a low shutter speed to get a smooth blended image of the fast flickering screen.

dirty, but i got what i wanted...

You should do some sort of blur effect-or increase the shape density. Another suggestion is if the shapes shifted slightly every .1-.01 seconds. This would increase the image quality drastically.

filters are not possible without killing the framerate.

it's the same with slightly shifted pixels.
the program is writing directly to the display memory through nybbles (4 bit groups), i.e. the engine don't allow the easy shifting of single bits/pixels or pixel-columns.

you can play around with the voxel2space techdemo to see in what a higher display/voxel resolution results.

download it through the original article and run it.

you can change everything, pixel increment, depth resolution or ray division iteration. the controls are shown on screen.

keep in mind that it's not that advanced as the v2-engine, so it's even slower...

I have a HW3 (with ASM 3.0) and PreOS 0.7 (or is it 7.0?). I got the other program to run, just not the Studio thingie.

you was right. i'm working with tict-explorer which shows a different memory size than the mem screen of the ams.
i can start VX.Studio with 160 kb of free ram displayed by the ams and 140 kb displayed by the tict-explorer.
even with preos 7 installed, i could make free 189 kb of ram! i've tested it also on ams 3.0 and i can't see any further problems.

Speaking of the 89(Ti):

1. In a pulldown in Windows TI Connect 1.5, the 89Ti is referred to as 89 Plus Silver Edition.

2. I fugured out why the 89Ti looks different from all other calcs:
People would take the case off an 83+ and put the 89 innards (HW) in it, then replace the purple ALPHA button with the 83+'s X,T,<theta>,n button, and take it illegally into the ACT. Round F# buttons + different key spacing = no replacing (without a lot of work).

You know, you don't really need an 89 to do good on the ACT...and 83+ would work just as well, if you knew the concepts

I toally agree. I got a 33 on the ACT with my 83 Plus.

The 84+(se) has bar-type Y=, GRAPH, etc. The 89Ti's are circular.
