The Return of the Voxels
Posted by Michael on 8 September 2004, 04:33 GMT

[Voxel demo] The second version of the make-you-drool graphics voxel demo has been released, now utilizing the improved "V2-Engine." Those of you who missed the original article will want to look at the original file to see the improvements. There also is now the VX.Studio, an on-calc tool to create voxel landscapes on the 89/92+/V200. I'm still not sure if it has reached the point of practical applications yet, but eye candy will always have a niche. If nothing else, impress your friends at school.

Looks neato, but does it still suck on a real calculator? I know the first version was only worthwhile on VTI.

This would make an interesting library for games. One could make a game like Tribes or something, so I hope the author releases some usable libraries soon. Of course, I'm off calculator programming until I find a point in writing software for a community of less than 100000 that doesn't give me any money and no longer gives me any "kick" to write for, but I can still mooch off of other people's stuff (I mean, I am a senior in high school with classes that bore me to tears...)

Does this mean that we might finally have the ability to make a great flight simulator! Or maybe something even better! LOL

Awesome and gemini in the same sentence. (I know that he did not put them in the same sentence, but they should have been.) That does not seem right, mainly because gemini sucks....

Doesn't that only use half of the screen?

Played it. It was good, but the hit detection SUCKED, and the computer enemy's were clueless to my existance.

If they are facing you then they will shoot. Otherwise they don't "see" you.

Hey! I liked Gemini. It had more weapons than Wolfenstein, and reload animations, which was mindblowing for me when I saw them on an 83. I never made a side-by-side comparison between Gemini and Wolfenstein, though...

Pool! We need to start a money pool to get CajunLuke some games! Nobody should have to live like that!

I'm not interestes in FPSs, if that isn't obvious. My parents bought me a $2500 Mac, a $200 Voyage 200, and a $100 83 Plus. I think I could have not gotten any one of those and gotten a FPS, but they are far more interesting.

Pah! You haven't played Unreal Tournement. It makes Gemini seem like Pong. ...no I take that back. It makes it seem like old IBM punch cards.

Whatever happened to Thomas Nussbaumer's FAT-engine? Anything usefull came out of that?

I haven't visited this site in a couple of years ;) I'm way too old to play with calculators. But my little sister asked to borrow my TI-89 for her highschool math so I just got it from the basement storage. I wonder if she can handle the power. Mowahahaha!

Basement storage!?! Insanity! And yes, and few fps games were made with it.

There have been a lot of great games using TICT's FAT Engine, such as: Oblivion, Arena 3D, Counter-Strike, and Pacman 3D (probably missed several). You should definitely check them out!

This program is, while a waste of time given the slow speeds of the TI-89, very, very cool.

Keep it up.

"If nothing else, impress your friends at school."

Of course, most of my friends at school don't even know what voxels are...and those who do aren't calculator geeks, and would think "what a waste of time."

Although this defintally deserves massive geek points. :-)

Voxels = Volume Elements (or Volume Pixel?).

They're like Pixels (Picture Elements), but they are 3-dimensional instead of only 2-dimensional.

Or were you being sarcastic? I couldn't tell without context.
