Project Qonos: PDA/Calculator Hybrid
Posted by Michael on 14 June 2004, 17:01 GMT

There is an interesting project under development called Project Qonos (that's the name of the Klingon homeworld). Qonos is a Linux PDA that will focus on a number of scientific applications, including graphing calculators. It will emulate the TI-89 and HP 48/49G. Hydrix has a survey where your opinions can shape the development of this device. You can read more detailed information at hpcalc.org.

This could be a useful calculator. I think it is too expensive but it could be very good for programming. You could have everything you need for programming in one little machine.

Yes, but chances are that in cannot emulate TI and HP assembly-maybe BASIC though...

What makes you say this??? Seems to me it could emulate assembly very easily.

Even if it does not emulate the 68k assembly programs, it runs linux, and you could just put Vti on it!

Now THAT is a good idea. A perfect clone of Wolfenstein 3D!

I don't whether running a TI emulator is legal ? Yes, it is. But, we will need a ROM dump so we will need a real calc.

Anyways, I don't think that TI will like that...

TI doesn't care about VTI... and it lets you use ROMs off the internet.
Besides, I don't think TI would care that much... I guess it depends on how well this emulator runs.

They probably made a deal on it anyway so TI already made a lot of money.

TI does care (they've shut down any number of ROM sites), and even if they didn't, it would still be illegal.

So that's why ticalc doesn't have ROMs... j/k

VTI does not provide the feeling of a hand held. And you can't take vti to school with you. An emulated ti89 on this Qonos is going to feel hundreds of times more natural than vti.

In the past hp publicly distributed thier roms and considered pc emulation good advertising for the hardware. They might care now if a 3rd party provides emulation that does not advertise the convenience of their hardware.

TI is different in that they do not allow others to distribute their roms, yet rom updates are freely available from ti's site. On one hand ti needs to make getting updates easy for their users, but on the other hand they need to prevent piracy.

So it depends on how the Qonos guide book tells people to get thier roms. If they give step by step instructions as how to download from ti then they are asking for trouble. But if they provide software that dumps a rom into a proprietary format (meaning I can't donwload a .89u and convert it) then I don't see any issues.

When you think about it, the hardware that goes into TI's calcs really is not all that pricy. What you are really paying for is the software on them.

They most likely will make a deal with the company. HP already has and if this idea takes off and the HP is the only calc being emulated, then TI might be put to shame for not allowing it. I really don't think they are going to let that happen, so they will take a small cut in the sale of each (remember, 89 is still cheaper so ppl will most likely buy that). I might buy one, but then again, you can't use that on an AP test because it's a PDA... unless it's approved by the College Board, then I guess I can only wish I had it, and TI will get yet more business from myself :D

The ROM would be provided with the machine.

I did a while back. At this point taking the survey now is pointless as Hydrix seems to have finalized their design decisions. (from what I've read on comp.sys.hp48)
