Antrun for 83/83+
Posted by Michael on 9 February 2004, 22:53 GMT

[]Antrun by Job van der Zwan is a game for the 83/83+ (83 version) where you must guide your ant (conveniently the size of a single pixel) across as many tiles as possible. In order to accomplish this, the tiles must be rotated so that he does not smash into a wall and die. According to the author's readme, you can imagine your pixel to be anything, even a cephalopod. Cuttlefish and octopi!

Is there a reason to need to test?

Yes, I've been fixing two minor bugs in the system. (No, you would not have seen them, things that only showed up for the news editors)

The only thing that I think it lacks (seriously) is a pause (or save game) feature. I have had several times that I wanted to stop and I had to start over. Anyway, I guess that's why it's called v1.00. I still like it anyway.

Like I said in the news item on greenfire (see URL) I bodged this game together in two evenings :).

But you're right, I probably should build in a pause and save function. And a timer that gives you a headstart in the beginning of the game. The lack of those options is kind of frustrating at times.

I don't know if anyone else has had this happen but I have had a few times that at the start I can not do anything to keep it going - it gives me a piece followed by a blank so I get "game over, score 1" and I think there might be a need for a safety to prevent blanks at the first screen created.

Just trying to help improve a good idea.

Also, is it possible to make the squares any bigger? I think it would make it more playable. If not, that's not much of a problem compared to the game ending at the begining. Anyway, I've gotten up to 443 points.

--ideas--
1. main menu
2. pause
3. save
4. bigger blocks
5. high score counter
6. anything else you do (or don't) want to include (or don't want to include)

I still think it is neat and addictive.

Hmmm... it's not supposed to give a blank. I can see only one possibility. Let me check the source; I'll get back to you in a sec

Re: Re: Re: Suggestions

Right, I checked the source, and I found the reason: the randomizer doesn't "reset" when you end the game. Let me explain: initially it generates only non-blanc tiles, but as the game progresses it can also generate blanc ones. When the game ends, ION writeback writes the progressed-game randomizer back as if it were the initial randomizer. So the next time you start the game it CAN generate blanc tiles even though it shouldn't. The reason I never catched this bug was because I never tested playing the game repeatedly.

ARGH!!! Stupid automatic Ion writeback; it's more of a burden than anything else with this game :(.

I'll change it in a later version; although I can't say how long it'll take me to program it.

I use MirageOS. I like it better but I have an 83 plus SE.

Too bad the news is going away. I liked it.
