Civilization Simulator
Posted by Michael on 8 February 2004, 18:00 GMT

[Civilization Simulator]Civilization Simulator I is a BASIC game for the 83/83+ by Kerm Martian. An ancient civilization is created and lives in 3-D, fully zoomable and scrollable. Your goal is to guide your fledging society through three ages, gathering food and building structures. Due to the nature of BASIC programs, gameplay is slow but the game does an excellent job with the graphics.

I suggest a 68k Basic Port, which'll give better graphics and speed instantly. Good Job Kerm, though there are better Basic games (graphically). I sorta wish my iStudio Viewer 3.1 (86 asm) would be mentioned...Oh well :-) Good work, Kerm...Impressive. Hope you don't get bashed too horribly for your ~290 other 'programs'.

and with file sizes in the KBs, why not bundle all the 82, 83, and 83+ versions together? The main difference between the programs is the extension (.8xp, .82p, .83p). Although the comment about file type is different in the beginning, the actual code and such varies little.

I tend to port very few of my programs to the 82, because most depend on user-created list; the 82 can only handle L1 to L6.

group files

Kerm, grouping your file by title would, of course, decrease how many files you have. Morgan IS kind enough to keep file stats with the group, so if you group 3 files with file d/l of 3765, 12976, and 234 then the grouped file will have 16975 downloads. That explains my DBZGT RPG. It's not a crime to group files and the ticalc.org staff is very patient about it. This would improve acceptance, even if just a little. If I were on staff file grouping (by author/title) might be mandatory, or I'd at least push the ? until Magnus caved :-p Joking... C'iao dudes!

He's probably British and objects to the 'z' instead of 's' in civilization.

I saw this game on Kerm's site a little while ago, back when it was called "Age of Empires." I assume he changed the name due to copyright infringement.

Finally, a BASIC prog is featured. I remember the golden days of BASIC, back with SiCoDe and what not...ah...

I was fairly sure that I fixed all aspects of the readme - where did you find this? I'll change it to CS1.

yea... lol... ALL of it (~290 "programs"). xept of course for this (Civ Sim) because i actually think that it is very good for BASIC. i hate all the other crap, but this actually seems well made, and somewhat complex (and it has the added bonus of not already being built into the OS). BTW ive made MANY BASIC math progs to help me do homeworka nd such faster, but i dont release them. why? there is enough BASIC math crap up already, and probably something that does the same thing. plug - there needs to be more ASM math progs...

Yah... the only difference is, SiCoDe made good programs, and didnt just release loads of crap.

Geez, give him a break. You're too used to ASM, so you probably can't appreciate these kinds of BASIC programs. It just goes to show how talented people are with very limited resources. Just look - a BASIC game with decent pseudo-3D! It uses good-looking pseudo-3D sprites with a 3D top-down feel. Very impressive to fit on 14K of RAM, if you ask me.

Just 'cause something can be done in BASIC doesn't mean it should.

on the contrary... I hav been programming ASM for maybe 6 months now, and programmed BASIC for years before that. I fully appreciate THIS program. It is good. However, the rest of his programs, especially the math ones, are a tad bit superfluous.

I think you are underestimating BASIC, It is as powerful as the hardware and your programing skills alow. Better graphics can be done

Re: Re: Re: Civilization Simulator

Yeah, give him a break. Even though his programs don't have the speed of asm, they have acomplished more with basic than most programmers could. It might be easy to hate him because he's on top of the busiest authors list with basic programs, but he earned it. He didn't make 200 quadratic formula programs. If it takes him 4 weeks to make a program, then he has worked at least as hard as any asm programmer and deserves everyone's respect.

Again, I think that this program is VERY good. I still think that it should be ported to ASM, however.
