The Return of the Reviews
Posted by Magnus on 24 January 2004, 16:18 GMT

A lot of people have been asking us if we are going to bring reviews back. And we've always responded "yes, but we don't know when". Well, we can now announce that reviews will be brought back to ticalc.org on January 24th, 2004, at approximatly 16:00 GMT.

The main change from before is that we now allow (and ask!) anybody with an account to write a review. Just open up the fileinfo page for the file you want to review, and click the link. All reviews will be checked and possibly edited by one of our staff members before posted to the site.

The reviews from the old system are not currently included. We will look into ways to bring them back without bringing back outdated information over then next couple of weeks.

Get reviewing!

Update (Morgan): A suggested format for a review is now up. Also, just as a reminder reviews@ticalc.org is open to you as well. Here is another example of a well written review.

I'll write a review for your software if you write a review for mine :)

My account has changed in so that my author list doesn't show up with my account, but if your actually interested in review swapping, I could tell you the program(s) I've wrote.

Writing reviews for your own programs, for instance, is probably a patently bad idea...

But that still woud be a bad idea

ticalc.org says you cant or you'll be suspended or banned from the site. Its really not that hard to do... however I don't know how they'd do it on the ".html" homepage. Maybe they have a "contentless" include that execs a script to check if youre banned? they would probably have to tweak apache's httpconfig, if they run apache, to get ssi to work on a ".html" extension...

Posting reviews is sort of... unclean... feeling. If you need to hype your own game, it isn't good enough.

Famous authors and poets have done it before. Tacky. Just tacky.

Even Napoleon did it! (Though with his battles, not with his writings) But yes, your program's readme and description should be enough to hype it.

It's funny...the template that Morgan announced was written by...huh?...Morgan! Is that kinda like writing a review about your own review? That shouldn't be allowed... :) j/k

There was a purpose to writing it! Some reviews submited were short and needed more information. The template is there mainly for sugested length and depth of coverage of the program.

But hey that is a drag not being able to review your own file :-) But would you really want to?

Although technically I probably could write my own reviews (having an account different from my last upload 2 years ago), I would think it would be pretty stupid to do so. If any of my programs are reviewed, the thing I'ld be most interested in is how people like or dislike my software, I'm not much for self-praise.

i dont see the point in reviewing your own files. If you want to hype them, you can already do that in the description, so why would you want to write a review?

Heh, reviewing your file doesn't work for obvious reasons.

Oh, I just thought of something... if about three or more people review the same file, the page for that program could become very large... could the reviews be viewed on a separate page? There could be a link to it... with a counter of how many reviews it has...

Just an idea

Actually Magnus already thought of that when he created the system. If you look at the link above to the Gran Tourismo page it shows 1 review, which is the latest review written. The link below it shows all the reviews written with a link to write anoher. That latest review will always appear on the fileinfo page.

but the review that appears on the file info page is the review i wrote, which was the first one, dated 1/24/05. The other review is the latest one, dated 1/25/04, and only appears when you click on the link.

Wow...you went into the future just to make a review? That's pretty cool. Think you could go in the past for me and tell me how to invent the TI calculator so that I can become rich and share my wealth with you? That'd be great. (If you don't understand this, you said 1/24/*05*) ;)

Re: ¤

so i wrote a program in BASIC on my calculator, called "future", and it went like this:

:Dialog
:Title "future"
:Text "so, you wish to go to the future..."
:Request "For what purpose do you go?",purpose
:Request "And who do you serve?",serve
:Request "And who do you hate?",hate
:Request "And who is merely okay?",okay
:EndDlog
:If inString(purpose, "For calculators") and inString(serve, "TI") and inString(hate, "Casio") and inString(okay,"HP") Then
:Goto future...

So i went to the future, and bought a new Ti-89 titanium, and then wrote a program on it called "past", that would take me to the past. So then i went to the past. And i tried to sabotage casio. But it didnt work. Becuase they were so sucky there was nothing for me to sabotage. So i came back here. But enroute my Ti-89 titanium was destroyed by evil stupid casio minions... So now i leave on a crusade... TO DESTROY CASIO....

That's good-otherwise we could get many "fake reviews" like that, and no one would trust the good reviews...

Easy to get around. I personally have gotten bored twice and thus have other accounts. You could just use one of those.

Huh... I had no idea. Well, if it wants to be enforced, I will be glad to turn myself in. I know that reviewing your own stuff is not only pointless, but also a very sad act, so I will not be doing that.

I would also turn mysqlf in. THe whole reason I have multiple accounts is because I wanted to change my username, but I think the other accounts have expired and been expunged by now.
