The Return of the Reviews
Posted by Magnus on 24 January 2004, 16:18 GMT

A lot of people have been asking us if we are going to bring reviews back. And we've always responded "yes, but we don't know when". Well, we can now announce that reviews will be brought back to ticalc.org on January 24th, 2004, at approximatly 16:00 GMT.

The main change from before is that we now allow (and ask!) anybody with an account to write a review. Just open up the fileinfo page for the file you want to review, and click the link. All reviews will be checked and possibly edited by one of our staff members before posted to the site.

The reviews from the old system are not currently included. We will look into ways to bring them back without bringing back outdated information over then next couple of weeks.

Get reviewing!

Update (Morgan): A suggested format for a review is now up. Also, just as a reminder reviews@ticalc.org is open to you as well. Here is another example of a well written review.

This is really cool - I was going to ask if you could review your own programs (hoping the answer was no, for the sake of fairness), but then I saw the post below. I hope that people use this feature responsibly.

Sorry for the double post - I had an idea.
Perhaps you could rig the system so that when someone reviews a program, it sends an email to the author of the program notifying them of this? Waddaya say?

i like that idea, i always appreciate feedback about my programs, but dont have the time to check them all to see if they have been reviewed.

I think reviews could only turn out bad for you.

do you mean me (i.e. as a blatant insult to me) or programmers in general (i.e. people might misuse it)?

I believe that was a blatant jab at you. I have not tried any of your programs, so I have no grounds to complain, but a launcher for basic programs seems about as useful as a halt and catch fire operand egg cooker for the calculator... Then again, I could be wrong.

Somewhat unrelated...but...
one of my programs seems to have vanished - how did that happen? Because I deleted that copy on my hard drive. :'(

I already e-mailed you and even sent you a copy of the program I removed...did you lost it or did you post this before you checked your e-mail?

You would need an anti-spam and anti-bot system... One of those things that makes an image of letters and numbers scrambled so only a human can read them.

O_o

No, there are bots that can read HANDWRITING, let alone scrambled letters.

I think you overestimate current handwriting recognition techniques. Handwriting is much easier than anti-bot images since it is generally a single color on a single background color. The most reliable systems for practical use will also use a dictionary to correct recognition mistakes. Using multicolored images, non-standard letter shapes, and nonsense words, it is easy to come up with things that a human can read that no bot can (if it were possible, the creator would make tons of money writing perfect OCR software for scanners instead of limited money from spam).

Perhaps an inferring OCR that looks at patterns as if they MUST be letters and finds closest match... I believe current OCR uses a technique of looking through a database and comparing the text to a database... if a letter is too obfusciated, it will probasbly be human unreadable too...

Yes, I think that is a good idea. However, if somebody else doesn't like the idea, here's what you can do: set it as an option to send an e-mail when one of your programs is reviewed. That way, it pleases both sides. That sounds good to me :)

w00t!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got a new computer! This is my first post on the new computer!!!!!!!! (160GB is hot)

It's a very good idea. I want to know if people like my programs, and this way, I won't have to keep on checking each one to see if it has a review yet.

Another *idea*:
Make a sidebar on the main page similar to the new Featured Programs, High Stats, etc boxes for "Latest Reviews".

How many reviews have been uploaded so far?

I think there already *was* a "Latest Reviews" sidebar on the main page, but it stagnated and was removed.

Yes! This is great! I really like the idea of allowing anybody to contribute a review! I also like the idea that the will be filtered so that nobody will write bogus reviews. Great job! :)

Reviews are good to have if written by honest, unbiased folk. I'd like to see some of my files FAIRLY reviewed. Preferably my Dragonball-Z-GT RPG and its Cheater friend (both exist on most TI platforms). See URL above.
