Maze 3D Beta 5 Released with Source
Posted by Andy on 27 October 1999, 22:51 GMT
In what Icarus Productions understates as a "big surprise," Maze 3D Beta 5 has been released with the source code included. Maze 3D is a high performance ray-casting engine for the TI-86. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past few years, a ray-casting engine is what games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom/Doom II are based upon. It is likely the release of this program with the source will spark other programmers to develop interesting games that make use of this engine.

OK. I downloaded and tested it, I am glad the level editor and tile editor is included, but was actually disapointed, I, like many, have played v.4 and waited for an update but knew it would never happen, but it has happened. The game seems way different, v.4 was cool, it seems he added to much to it, and now it seems like a different engine. Maybe he could make it easier to see, it blurs when going to fast, v.4 didn't do that. Just some views is all. Otherwise I think it is still cool. I can't wait till weapons and such are added, as originally promised.

This engine is pretty cool. Now, if only some programmers would try to make something like Doom for the 86.... :P

That sounds great for you TI-86 people, but what about me? I have a TI-89 and I am wondering if anyone would consider working on a project like maze3d for the 89. It seems like it would be very possible to make a nice engine because of the faster processor and higher resolution screen. Has anyone been considering this?

TI-89 Raycasters

Nathan (Clark, not Haines):
There was a raycaster released in Fargo II for the TI-92 quite some time ago called World in 3d. It had more objectives than Maze3d but it was b/w instead of grayscale. You had to find 3 or 4 keys, kill one enemy with your axe (it was a giant skull and you could see the axe in front of you all the time), and not get killed. It was so buggy that it didn't end when you were killed, and the game couldn't be restarted by quitting and running again, but it had to be deleted and reloaded. It was still nice, but it was sluggish on a regular 92 and was better on the 92 II. Anyway, does anyone remember this one? If so, someone could reduce the screen size and port it to the 89... Anyway, Since I have an 86, 89, and 92, I'm not getting impatient, I'm just reminding everyone that there is a raycaster out there for the 92 that could be put on the 89.

for Clem:
Whatever happened to Mosaic? I was one of the beta testers and it was turning out to be the best shell ever for the 86... it still would be if you'd finish it :-)
I've still got my notes/thoughts/suggestions on it too if you're still interested in the project.
And if you aren't, maybe you should either release the source to that too or hand it over to someone who you know would do a good job of finishing it.

fun...
I just hope that any games based on this engine include the grayscale and mono versions. Grayscale is too slow on anything but a turboed calc, and I've already voided my warrenty enough... anyone know how two fix the dread missing line syndrome?
