The teachers request "a graphing calculator, preferably a ti-83". So, knowing nothing about graphing calculators, we all buys ti83s. And they're "suggested" for the SATs too.

Most schools sugest TI 83+ for Geometrey, but the fact of the matter is the course should be able to be tought without it, ifit's tought correctly. Anyways... The point I wanted to say is... Most schools sugets the Ti 83+'s because TI 89's and TI 92's are not allowd on Calc exams, or APCalc Tests/Exams, and last I knew, they weren't allowd on the SAT's, mainly because they'll do the job for you, you don't have to actually do any work.
So... Most students at High School's buy TI 83+'s because one there school sugests it, and two the 89, and 92 are pointless if you can't use them on a test.
One last thing... I know my school, and most schools own at least two class room sets of TI 92's. So students don't have to waste money on them.
