But it's not an officially recognized group, and I'm the only member. :)

There is only one other person in my school who actually knows how to used his calculator as well as I do (actually, he's much better with it than I). I think we are the only people in our school who actually know how to program (though many others would claim to know, thinking that HTML counts.)

well, technically, because you are writing a computer interperated web page in HTML, it WOULD be considered programming, even though HTML is a scripting language (I think.)

After all, HTML is recognized by computers like TI Basic is recognized by calcs, and we accept TI Basic as a programming language...

I don't consider it programming because it's a scripting laungauge. Whether or not a language is natively recognized by a system, does not have any bearing on whether or not is a programming language.

I could even accept javascript as a programming language, but these kids don't even know that.

Correction: HTML is a markup language ^Link^, though my point still stands.

Well, it would never happen at my school. To create a club, there must be at least 10 members, and at least one sponsor/administrator, and the petition must be submitted along with the justification to the principal. If it is acceptable, permission will be granted.

Problem #2: because it's "non-accademic" it would not be allowed to use announcements, school website, or other technology/media systems to make announcements

so, as you can probably see, it's not worth trying.

Maybe in your school it is not worth trying, but I'm sure most schools would think different. If a school says that something taught in universities isn't academic, then all the staff at that school need to be fired. Programming isn't just academic, it is beyond academic.

Programming is *better* than academic stuff. I'd much rather be hacking the GNOME interface than sit in a classroom listening to a boring history lecture any day.

If you're sitting in a boring math class, TI BASIC is fun enough.

This policy started this year. It's killing all the clubs. Especially community service like Interact (branch of Rotary International) and Key Club...Only clubs that are "academic" -- that there is a class with a grade, can use announcments and media systems. This is why our website is on Yahoo GeoCities and not the school website.

That's insane! How can they justify killing a community service club?

they're not. but because we're non-academic, we can't use the "media system" -- announcments, scroll borads, pa-system, etc.

All we can do is put up signs and hope they arn't torn down. As a result, nobody finds out about the meeting and nobody comes. Soon, the sponsors don't want to show up to watch one or two people and they stop coming. Then nobody comes and it is forgotten.

oh, and sports are at the state level so they arn't affected...go figure...

Hmmm... I'm probably the only person at my school who really knows anything about programming. I once wrote someone a pitiful guessing game and they were really impressed. *sigh* It actually seems to me that the people who don't know any programming don't have any games, those who are okay with BASIC have the most games, and people like me who know assembly have some games but don't use them much.

I'm sick of hearing all these people saying "I'm the only programmer. Oh well." Start a programming club and you will find a lot of people who would be interested in learning. Jeez! You people give up quickly.
