It's possible. Firefox shoots up download speeds at the beginning, so on my 1.5 Mbps DSL I get about 3 MBps for the first 5 seconds and then it gradually drops down. I'm not sure why that happens, but it does.

I should note that it actually downloads at 3 MBps for the first five seconds and it's not just an erroneous Firefox display. I downloaded an 8 MB file once and download completed in a little less than three seconds.

Maybe it has to do with compression. When I was on Earthlink dial-up I noticed that some files (for example, a huge text file with the digits of Pi) downloaded much faster than would ordinarily be possible, but binary files such as programs, audio/video files, etc., only downloaded at the normal speed.

True, but my DSL doesn't compress. And I had increased speed for binary files, not just text files.
