Yes but does it ever stall on you at the most inopportune times and kick you out of a CounterStrike scrim (the fact that you wouldn't play on dialup notwithstanding)?

I swear mine stalls for at least a minute several times a day, and it lags like hell a lot of the rest of the day.

I sometimes get awfully slow connection speeds over the cable at home, while dial-up is at least consistent more often. However, my college has a very fast link. I do not know exactly how fast, but I have gotten download speeds in excess of 10MB/s (but average between 400KB/s & 600KB/s), so I would bet it has to be faster than 10Mbps (& no, it cannot be compressing it very much, since the files were already compressed).

A dial-up modem will work anywhere -- worldwide.

What about phone jacks & signal formats (mainly number formats, but sometimes also tones)?

Ya--every month or so, the service shuts down, probably for maintenance.

Yeah, the FCC limits all dial-up connections to roughly 50 Kbps to reduce crosstalk among phonelines at the telco. A 56 Kbps modem is capable of such but will never be allowed to go any higher than 50 Kbps. Is broadband available in your area?

I'm fairly certain it's 53kbps.

I actually have gotten a 54.6 kbs connection many times with my standard 56k dial-up modem, so I don't know what that's about...And no, I am not kidding, that is what I get sometimes.

Forgot to mention, I'll soon not have to rely on the stupid dial-up at all soon. I already get uber-high speed at college, we have an insane amount of bandwith coming in, I've heard it is dual T-something lines, can't recall the exact number. And then I am getting DSL Tuesday, allegedly getting 6Mbs download, don't remember the upload, though.
Good riddance dial-up!!!

Not fast enough

The number is slightly important.

T1 = 1544 kbps (24*64k)
T2 = 6312 kbps (4*T1)
T3 = 44736 kbps (28*T1)
T4 = 274760 kbps (168*T1)

(data is from linked page)

I know the number is important, I just can't remember it. Although when I think about it, I think it is dual T3s, but don't hold me to that. Whatever it is, its pretty darn fast even during the middle of the day when everyone on the whole dang campus is on-line. There are like 12-13,000 students here, plus all the faculty, and even in peak times I can get >500k/s downloads, depending on the site. Often it is limited by the bandwidth of the server you are downloading from, anyway.

I got 54.6 once, occationally I get 53.4 (53.x ?) and usually I get 52.0

I also have a cell phone that usually runs at 119-124K and they claim it will max out at 144K (Verizon Wireless LV VX3300)

There's lots of us poor souls out there struggling along with 56K. It's not so bad; I do all my downloading at my school's library! It's great!

I have a good friend who went years with 56k because he couldnt get dsl in his area. Partway through senior year he got satellite, which was slower than dsl and had terrible latency, but was far better than dialup. It always sucked for him because he downloaded a lot of stuff and spent a lot of time involved in web design, especially flash and such.
