I haven't yet and plan to try to some time soon. I only have two calcs so I dont want to mess up either of em, maybe I can risk screwing up my 84, but dont want to.

I'm sure it's not that dangerous if done right. However, it would be dangerous if I attempted it since I wouldn't know what the hell I'm doing. I have to use my calc for Physics (since I droped Calculus II) and can't afford (or am not willing to) buy another.

I am a Electrical Engineer and i have overclocked a TI-89 and 86. It is perfectly safe to overclock a TI calculator just so you dont break it when you take it apart and know what your doing ahead of time. My 86 is approx running at 24 MHz and the 89 is approx 40 MHz. The only draw back I have found is the batterys die quicker but it is worth it if your a TI gamer.

Exellent artical Mike but you forgot to mention that the CPU stays cool no matter what the speed. By the way if you have shakey hands dont even try to overclock your calc you will most likely break it if you have shakey hands.

The period in your sentence should be before the quotation mark.

How do you overclock an 86? I've got an 89, so all I use my 86 is games. Send instructions or post a web address. I am kind of a budding electronics freak, so want to know how.

WOW. I overclocked my 85 to 18mgz,(no big deal) but how in the world did you get the 89 to 40mgz? I thought that if you go over 16mhz, the memory access gets all screwed up. I'd like to hear how you got yours to work.

Me and soldering irons just don't mix. I'm told by my friends I'm the only person they've ever seen build a supposedly 6 volt device that caught fire when turned on... And that's on one of the rare occasions when my creations did anything at all...

There's no way in hell I'm gonna mess with the innards of my calc. Now, if a "friend" wanted THEIR calc overclocked, well, maybe... (heh heh)

I overclocked my ti-86 to 70 mhz by switching the chip to a strong arm processor, but it screwed up.

you must be stupid to think a caculator with out modifications . i can get my calculator up to 30mhz just by changing a capasitor any thing higher will need more modifications Dose any one know anything about back lighting cause i understand it on the ti-86 but i dont know if it would work on a 83+

yes it can be dangerous if you dont know what you are doing .I have done this and its pretty simple (atleast to me and im in 8th grade)my calc now runs faster than any other calc in the school including silver editions.if you want some pretty detailed instructions e-mail me at mongoose64@att.net
cause all the web site i have been to have been vage in some pert in the procedur or a nother this took my about 3 days because the instructions failed to tell me i need
a:
>torx 7 screwdriver or a screw remover drill bit to take out the torx screw (that was the hard patrt)
>a sodering iron
>a 6pf capasitor (max speed) or a 15-33pf capasitor(2xspeed)
>a small dpst switch (optional)
>patience (i have very little)

Re: Have you overclocked your TI graphing calculator?
JaggedFlame

is overclocking dangerous just for changing the chips, or is it also dangerous that you might overwork the processor? if thats not true, then why doesn't ti just overclock their own processors and THEN market the calcs?

probably, it has to do with battery power.
personally, the only thing i ever overclocked was a 233 mhz. computer to 266 and it works fine :)

That's actually not a bad idea. HP overclocks the processor from 2 mhz in their calculators to 4 mhz and considered overclocking it to 6 mhz in the HP49g but decided against it. The two bad things about overclocking are it drains battery power quickly and the processor heats up more, but with a calculator, heat probably isn't much of an issue.

At least with the TI-83+ its a 8mhz prossesor but it only runs at 6mhz..... So u could run it a 8 w/o probs

TI 83+ Runs at 8 MHz
Paul Marks  Account Info

yea, i know it COULD run at 8 MHz... but how do they "downclock" it? If somebody could
figure that out, then you could undo that and run it at the true 8 MHz...

If anybody knows, email me at pmarks@employees.org

when they first released the athlon, they had planned to start at 650 mHz. But, they decided that was WAY too fast for normal computers, so they underclocked the PC's to 500. This was soon leaked, and many of the '500s' were quickly brought back up, and the customers got one heckuva deal. I've included an URL where I think you can get some information on basic overclocking...i don't know if they talk about the z80, but there's more than likely somebody that knows.
