Survey idea by Morgan, some of the choices added by me : )

And I personally want the Titanium so I have the latest 89, and so that I can also have a layer of protection for my current 89.

<rant>Well, I currently have an 83+BE. I want an 84+SE for the extra EEPROM _NOT JUST_ for games. I don't have enough time to play games. I have so many _MATH AND PRODUCTIVITY_ Apps/AppVars that I cannot store them all on the calculator at one time. I recently cleared out quite a bit to load a game on it, but that was just for bug testing the game for the developer.

In short: Not everyone would use the extra storage for games.</rant>

BE is Blue Edition, the least-known of the 83+ series. I think its only advantage over black is more archive space. And it's all cool-looking translucent blue. But perhaps he did mean black, who knows? :-)

The TI-83+ pacific Blue edition (direct quote from TI), is "just a TI-83+ in a trendy blue case".

It does not have extra flash ROM, and ships with a few free apps by TI (puzzpack, scitools, studycards, CBL/CBR, and Probsim). It also has compatibility issues with Ztetris 1.1 (the blocks are funny shapes), Super mario 1.2 (annoying horizontal line across the screen), and Bubble Bobble (annoying line below character)

the Black version is far superior.

I've seen that "black line" from Super Mario Bros. on some of my friends' TI-83+/SE's. I don't think the error is specific to the blue edition.

That's actually really interesting, because I didn't think the Blue Edition calculators were any different from the regular TI-83+'s, other than the obvious change in casing color. What's different about the Blue Edition that causes the errors in the games?

Probably a subtle change in the way the manufacturer made the chips. OT anecdote to prove point:

In the early days of lunar module part testing in around 1965, nitrogen tetroxide (propellant) manufacturers "fixed" their process to eliminate traces of nitrous oxide. This made the N2O4 more concentrated, which caused the propellant tanks to corrode. One exploded, and they had to fix the problem by adding 0.5% by weight nitrous oxide to the N2O4.

The horizontal line problem is not specific to the blue version. It happens on my TI-83+ black edition. Ti is right "just a TI-83+ in a trendy blue case"

The Titanium looks like a sweet calculator. I kinda with there were more posts here so I could look at the pros and cons of buying one. I want to get a new calculator, but I'm not sure if I should get the 84 Silver or the 89 Titanium. I'm going into Calculus (Hon.) next year, and I want to know which calculator would better suite my needs. Anybody have any suggestions?
P.S. I voted for "gotta buy them all". I have an 83+, 86, and 92, so it's a start.

I say get the 89 Titanium over the 84 Silver because the 89 is such a cool calc and is only improved in the Titanium. By the way, I chose more RAM, I like having a lot of space on my calc.

Good argument, 84's practically the same as the 83 anyway. But is there any Calculus specific reason to get the 89. 129 bucks is more than I'd care to spend if it doesn't help me a whole lot extra in math. I know it's more advanced, but does it do enough Calculus related stuff that the 83 doesn't to make it worth buying?

I think that it really depends on the course that you are taking. The one that I took, I could have done it without any calculator at all. I also bought a level 3 calculus book from amazon.com, and it is designed so that you can use a high level calculator for some extera problems, but over all it is not needed. I would recommend checking with your school.

Yah, I'll check with the school. plus, now that I think about it, I bet i could just make programs to make up for what the 89 does. I'm also not very fond of the Homescreen/menu setup on the 89. I'll just stick with the 83+, or an 84 if I somehow end up with an extra 15636 Yen (129 dollars).

You could make programs to imitate some of the 89 functions, but something like a CAS would not be easy. However, I really think that such things are better left to your head. Arithmetic, on the other hand, is quite prone to error; I like to use my calculator for that.

Personally, the biggest reason that I would like an 89 over an 8(3/4)+(se) is that there is not a chess AI that can beat me for the 83's.

yah, my math program (which was largely circulated throughout school) did so many damn things it was ridiculouse. however, I can't quite think of what CAS could possibly stand for. Please tell me so I can make one for my 83. Mwuahaha. anyway, as with most people who love their calculators enough to post on this website, I have a gift for math and don't need to do the same damn problem 400 times. I like when my calculator can do things for me.

P.S. Theres a reason none of the Chess AI's can beat you, is because Chess AI is EXTREMELY hard to make in the limited memory requirements (exceptionally easy with about 100 k.

CAS stands for Computer Algabra System.

I know how hard it is to make a Chess AI. I tried it. The hopelessness of it became apparent after I failed to make one in C++ for my 850 MHz i686 with 385 MB of ram! That is the main reason for why I would want an 89... but, I have a laptop so I can live without it.

Personally, I think that the z80 calcs are more fun to develop for. I am currently working on an app that will IMHO revolutionize the way that we work with these things. :) I hope to have it done some time this fall, but it might be longer.

The 89 home screen takes some getting used to, but now I like it a lot better than the blank home screen on the other calcs. The extra screen resolution adds to it too. I personally think it's an awesome calc, and if my 89 breaks I'm definitely getting an 89Ti, not an 83, 84, or even 86.

For doing calculus, an 84 is no better than a four-function calculator. The 89x/92x/V200 have a CAS, which you'll be using exclusively, and no other TI calculators have that. On the other hand, the 89 can turn into a crutch, so you might even consider (gasp!) no calc at all.

Getting the TI-89 when I already had an 83+ turned out to be the right thing for me to do, despite the price of the 89. If ever there's a problem I'm not sure about or need to work through quickly, I can simply have my 89 do it. Solving algebra equations, derivatives, and integrals from the home screen can really help in calculus. I would not get a titanium because none of the features make it worth the price to pay (for me, mostly because of college expenses).

Well, I've decided what I'm going to do. I'm going to beg my Mother for 50 dollars tward a purchase of a Ti-89 Titanium. I figure, there's practically no difference at all between the Ti-83+ and the 84's, so why waste money on it. This way, I can have both... Or maybe I'll just leave it alone and wait for my 83 to break, which won't be too long.

And could somebody explain what a CAS is, just so I can have a little preparation in the programming of one for the 83? Some of these programs can take time.

Computer Algebra System? would that be a system that computes Algebra?,just kidding. So that would be something where you enter some sort of equation with variables and what not, and it solves it out to the best of it's abilities or something, right?

What do u mean "theres no difference between the 83 and84! it has like 4X the memory and the legendary USB port. not to mention more ram, an available kickstand, and removable faceplates. it also appears to process a bit faster. theres more diff. btween the 83 &84 than the 89 and 89T.

Re: 84's!

Yah, all of that sounds true, but memory isn't really THAT improtant unless you love huge games, which I avoid. "It processes faster" is only really important if you want Games to go fast. I meant that the 83's and the 84's functions and power are pretty much the same. and yes, Definately, the 89->89Ti is much less of a difference than the 83 to the 84.
