I always try to see if a file has screenshots before I download it, though often, I'll still download a file if it doesn't have screenshots if it's something I think I need/like to try.

And I'm also curious as to how many people are going to pick the last choice...and please be serious about if you do : )

well, i assume that if they're reading your message they probably have already voted, so it's too late. and btw, I finally got Knoppix to run, I'm using Konqueror right now. Instant linux convert.

Heh, I'm using Knoppix right now too! I like Slackware a lot too, but Knoppix is really nice out of the box. I actually use it on a regular basis on our Win98 (ugh) machine.

It takes a little time and effort to configure it how I like it (mostly things like window decorations and behaviour) each time I boot it up, but that's a small price to pay for the usability, stability, and speed compared to Win98 (and even to XP). Actually, I'm now going to save my settings to the hard drive so I don't have to set them manually. Yay!

Just to be a little on-topic, I chose the second option. :)

it would be a nightmare if you couldn't create a persistant hdd image. you'd have to reconfigure kmail every boot! ugh...

I can't really say no, I've been screenshotting hundreds of files, so they do help alot with making a decision as to how useful the program may be. Example: "!!!WINDOWS-TI!!!" *basic code* <screenshots of dodgy looking windows-like shell for the Ti that actually restrict a calculators purpose> ...but hey, nice work on some of them.

Hah, so many people at my school would go with the last choice but they obviously haven't heard of ticalc.org. Hense, programs are tranfered via me or someone else...

IN REGARD TO SCREENSHOTTING: "Screenshotters should rate and review files."
The idea of doing that whilst downloading each file is... ridiculous. I will go around the directories I've done though *after I do 1k* and rate the files though. It should be easier to remember each file with a screenshot this way; as to downloading each file - screenshotting - rating, all at once is more efficient if you have a good memory...

When I look at the screen shots, it helps me determine what to expect from the program. It also sometimes helps me decide how this program runs and whether or not to download the program.

I like to watch the animated screenshots. I'll often skim through the new files and just click on the ones with animated screenshots just because they're fun to watch. And then, if I think it looks neat, then I'll read the readme and THEN download it.
I don't download too many programs without screenshots, even though there are some good ones that don't have screenshots. That's why Morgan's screenshotting committee is a good thing :)
<OT>Speaking of which, I may help out with that this summer. I'll need VTI on this computer, though. Does VTI run on WinXP?</OT>

While we're on the topic of screenshots being the determining factor in downloading a program, look at how the screenshot helped me out here! [link]

It's one thing when a program has an error in it, but it's even funnier when they get that in the screenshot :-D

(no offense to the author or anything :) Most likely you're trying to display a character outside of the 8x16 viewing screen... debug the program, looks pretty easy to fix)

It's especially ironic because he says in the description that it's bug-free :-D

If it does have a screenshot then I decide off of that whether or not to download it. Due to past experiences if it doesn't have a screenshot I don't download it because it probably doesn't work.
