I had to open up my 83. There are two little metal contacts inside the graph link port that are supposed to grip the cable, but they got bent and I couldn't link to anything anymore. It was either take it apart or get a new one... I basically lucked out that it was an easy fix. Just bent them back into place. Now the graph link works like new - better than new actually. I might have to play with overclocking now... :)

I've never personally opened up my calculator (at my prison.. er.. school, they don't allow sharp objects such as staples, screwdrivers or stuffed animals), but i know plenty of people who did, most of whom had to get serious repairs, new keys (they bounce all over the place when you open it up) or new calculators, depending on how bad they messed it up. Others I know have fixed their problems. If you're just going in there to poke around, my advice would be: forget it. If you have some technical/electrical knowledge and have a specific problem you know how to fix: go ahead, but take out some good insurance on it.

I had to open up my 83+; i was using the really old calc-to-calc cables that came woth my 82 3 years ago, and the very end broke off inside my calc. so i took the back off, which was very hard, considering i didnt have a 6-pointed screwdriver, and it has 6-pointed screws. but i fixed it, and it works fine.

Since I got my TI-89 half-a-year ago, I have been plotting to take apart my old TI-83. One day, I actualy tried it, but after I unscrewed everything (yes, including the back-up battery screw), It didn't pop open. I tried to pry it open, but got scared that I would break it and closed it back up (not with super glue, like that other guy). I have no idea how the heck to get it open. Pry it open harder? Smash it open? I have NO idea. I don't want to damage it or anythng, just take a gander at what's inside. My warranty has already expired (I've had it for 3 years), so I really want to open it and add a thing that lets me use AA battteries instead of AAA. I know how to do that part, but I don't know how to open it. Can somebody give me a hand???

Had to: two vertical lines on my display (86-1.4) don't work... i hoped the display-"cable" was loosened. Well the calc didn't broke, but the display still doesn't work. I can use my calc but I can't see what cards I got with FreeCell (missing some pixels where the number is)... Anybody help me?

Sure, I opened my TI-92 because someone spilled on it and the keys were sticking. It was simply a matter of removing a few screws and cleaning the offending keys with a Q-tip and some alcohol. It was very easy and caused no problems.

i have an 86 and i want to know how to overclock it!!! I opened it once to clean the sticking decimal key, and to overlook the insides. I didn't touch anything because i was scared- i can fix a computer, but not a calculator! i am ashamed of myself.
