Krolypto v1.0 Released
Posted by Joey on 21 March 2003, 06:47 GMT

Michael Vincent has released Krolypto v1.0 for the 83+. It is a 256-bit encryption engine for protecting sensitive information, or notes that you want to pass to friends. There are several security features implemented to make certain that your message cannot be cracked by brute force. Several passwords are required, and guessing the password incorrectly causes the message to be destroyed. Read the included readme file for more information.

Don't forget to do it over a radiolink, so that the security measures are justified.

Radiolink? Where can I get the hardware specs for that?

I've been looking for the schematics for that. If anyone knows where I can find it that would be very helpful.

I'm going to post this again

WORD man. This is phathoms eaiser than the IRLink. I'm not going to build it today, but only because I have not the money. But it will be soon. Any thoughts on making a case to house the links while not in use?

If you wan't a good encryption for the 83+/se try master key encryption 4th edition in the 83+ basic archives. it has 392 bit encryption with 11 passes and saves a hole lot of memmory.

392? I am a n00b at encryption, but I always thought it had to be a power of 2 (64,128,256...)

I remember mentioning that WAY back in the day (several months ago, to be exact). And the answer was no. I guess that it's just commonly a power of 2, but doesn't have to be.

Assuming that's just a substitution cipher, it'd be relatively easy to break using a frequency table (maybe not THAT easy, since it's a little on the short side) but I'm too lazy to try right now. Of course, it could be something else, but since you said it was 'stupid encryption', I'm just going to assume it's something simple.

This is actually quite an amazing advance if you ask me. With this, instead of using it for notes, and such, you could use it for things like applications that are to be sold for money, greatly reducing piracy. You could use it to protect your whole entire calculator from unwanted access, thus making your programs/data unerasable or accessable. I am sure there are a lot more uses for it, however, I am not feeling particularly creative. Often, the best inventions are used what they were not originally intended for. However, we will have to wait for the source to do anything with it. Anyone else have any ideas for use? Anyone think I am a moron? etc...

P.S. I would be willing to develop programs/applications with the above functions mentioned and so on if anyone is interested. E-mail me.

Personally, I will not buy calculator programs--if there's something that looks really cool, but I'd have to pay for it, I'd just write it myself or find a free program that does the same thing.

While I agree with you, I would rather find or make a application or program, there are instances where you might still want this kind of feature. I remain confident that almost 95% of all calculator software written will remain free (And open-source,) there are still uses for it, not for protecting it from piracy, though still a moderately good idea nevertheless. How many of TI's apps that are for sale do you see free versions of, not a whole lot. But besides that, you can still use it for a myriad of other purposes within programs. Still not feeling to creative, I am curious to see what other ideas people come up with. So someone post some of theirs please.

This program sounds GREAT! I mean, you could encrypt files if you wanted. You would want to, would you not? Of course not. It is a calc, for crying out loud. I mean sure, it is a neat little program. It would actually be usefull, if it were on, oh, say, a computer. But is is on a CALC. Sure, the man is programming in asm, that is more than I can say for myself, and it furthers his programming knowledge, but the program is unnecessary, and piontless.

Who puts sensitive files on their calculator. Get a pocket PC, if you have files other than programs.

Excellent point....but then again do we really need anything on the calculator. I think you'll find the password protection much more useful though. You can password protect the APPS and memory menus, and it will prompt for the password when you press them. Also, it can prompt for the password every time you turn on your calculator.

The comment about password protection and blocking the memory folder makes me think about the best program ever, Archive Utility version 2. for the 89 because of this program, i havent had to re-send a program to my calc in many many years(especially important on my 89 with a dead link), it makes it impossible to loose your archives, due to a crash or when someone intentionally trys to reset the calc, and the best part is that it can be set to appear, deleted until you enter the magic keystrokes so the evil pereson trying to delete your stuff never knows they were uncessfull, If a teacher or someone is trying to be mean and delete your stuff and it says "acess denied" they will make you do it, but if they have every reason to think it is gone, there is no problem, but most important, your calc is 100% crashproof

then comes the problem, it only works on ti-89 rom version 1.00 which well, it is very likely that i am the only person in the world still useing it there is a new version (3) but it allways crashed and still only worked up to rom 1.05

i mention this program because i really wish someone to make a version for the 83+ or possibly just update, this, the best program ever, i would volenteer but all of my attempts to learn asm have been uncessfull.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Krolypto v1.0 Released

Removing the back-up battery, normally causes the calcluator to loose its flash, this is because, when power is restored, the calculator is programmed to reset all, so yes your mem gets deleted but the program can restore it just as it would after any other reset

Incorrect. The backup battery keeps up the normal RAM. The Flash RAM, being EEPROM, does not lose its data when power is removed. This is why it is termed "archive RAM".

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Krolypto v1.0 Released

actually you do lose it, get an 89 and yank out all the batteries, the flash is gone afterwards, as i said, i know that it is not directly related to removing the batteries as that is the entire idea of flash memory, but the 89 purposefully resets everything when it realizes that the batteries were removed, rom v1.xx does this on puropse for some reason, on rom 2.xx ti realixed this was stupid and removed this feature

I have no clue how it works. I don't even use it myself. The reason being, I have FLib, and that covers the var hidding very well in itself. I asked the creator for the source, along with other people's source, but only the guy who wrote edit3D gave me his.

I had had bold plans to write an app for the 89, comparable ti MirageOS. It is going to be a while before that happens.

Well, he plans to release the source when he's made a final release, so you can take the source and put this program on your computer.
