Thomas Williamson releases Dragon Warrior 86 v1.1
Posted by Niklas on 23 March 2002, 16:22 GMT

For all you RPG fans out there, Thomas Williamson has released v1.1 of his clone of the NES game Dragon Warrior. Dragon Warrior 86 features every function found in the original (!), grayscale graphics, and hours of gameplay. It also comes with a complete walkthrough for those of us without patience. :)

This looks pretty sweet. One comment though: Once again, I find myself slightly annoyed by someone who calls themself a software company just because they've made two games. I'm sorry, people: You are NOT a company unless you sell your software. Otherwise you're just an independent programmer, such as myself. I've posted 52 files myself, but I don't go gallavanting about calling myself "Kris Kringle Software."

(Thomas Williamson called himself Biobytes Software.)

I know, I know. It's a geek thing. You're trying to get recognition for yourself, so you call yourself a company. Also......... further proof of the geek theory: A Star Wars-oriented e-mail address. (jedivsith@hotmail.com)

Not that there's anything wrong with being a geek. I'm a geek myself :-)

Wrong. A company is "a group of persons". What is wrong with having a programming group or company, even if there is only one person? Maybe there will be more people later, and he wants to have everything associated with that name. As an example, the TI-Chess Team originally only had one member.

I agree with you completely. Besides, people need an ego-boost and bragging rights every now and then: "Hey, guess what. I have a company called 343GuiltySpark, Inc. And I'm the head of it, too! Isn't that so cool?"

Of course you can. And so can no_one_2000_. Of course, realize that since you two would be new to the company, you would have to work for less than a cent a day and would probably be getting coffee and other things for me. Maybe I should have added <sarcasm></sarcasm> to my post about 343GuiltySpark, Inc.

Make that one creamer and two bags of coffee. And get some for yourself and no_one_2000_, you both deserve a coffee break.

Thank you Chickendude. And I'm sorry to hear that you spilled coffee on your new shirt. As compensation for your loss (incompetence) I'm going to get you a new shirt and promote you to cleaning the dust of the TI-80s in the attic.

I was talking to no_one_2000_, in case there was confusion. I'm sorry Chickendude, but you're going to have to stay in your current position as coffeeboy. Speaking of coffee, I'll have another cup.

That's ok. I like making coffee. Here's your coffee (I made it the same way with the same stuff as last time, as you seemed to like it that way).

You'll also notice I was talking about when A SINGLE PERSON calls themself a company (note the word "themself", not "themselves"

"Themselves" is always plural. There is no word "themself." The singular form is "himself" or "herself." If gender is unknown, or mixed as in "Each girl and boy calls himself the winner of the game."

This is not sexist or what have you--it's simply the way the language works. When our language lost object gender, we were left stuck with those gender-specific pronouns.

How do you talk without sounding 'sexist'? I don't worry about it, because anyone who knows me knows better. But you can use a common German formation which I always think sounds formal in English, but it's all we really have. "I hate it when one calls oneself a company." But "one" has to be the noun--"one person" and suddenly you need "himself" again.

Ahh, the joys of learning foreign languages (and therefore having to know one's mother tongue completely)!

Wow. Nice contradiction. A company is a group of persons, but it can be only one person. Persons != person. Group != one.

Wow, people are conversing almost in real-time on here. Spooky. I posted my first comment about six minutes ago and there were only four others; now there's 10.
