ti-cas.org Shutting Down
Posted by Eric on 19 February 2002, 22:28 GMT
This is a bit of old news, but I think it's worth mentioning that ti-cas.org, headed by Olivier Miclo, is shutting down due to conflicts with the French division of Texas Instruments. Read the page for a brief history and Olivier's thoughts on the issue. Sorry to see it go...

That's too bad. It seems our community is in a downward spiral. Hope ticalc.org survives!

ticalc.org will survive, not because of its news, but simply because of its archives. The fact that everyone uses ticalc to get files means that all authors will submit files there, even if it takes a while for them to get added, and so it will be easy for ticalc to maintain its file archive monopoly. This also allows them to be lazy about updating the site. Aside from the archives, nothing else new is ever added, or at least nothing much. Meanwhile calc.org is adding all kinds of new features. Only problem there is that they *don't* have the same size archive and the same popularity, and that they made some of the stuff at the top too many levels down, so that a lot won't get accessed.
Any new site needs to emphasize three things in order to become extremely popular
1) archives as comprehensive as ticalc's
2) consistant news
3) extensive user forums
Ticalc has #1 covered, so it has the huge userbase, and it sometimes has news. All the other sites only have #2 though or maybe half of #1 or half of #2. Hopefully a site will come together with these three sometime.
If you build it, they will come.

Hmm...well, I never went, because ticalc.org is really the only calc site I need. Still sucks, tho...I know I was sad when I shut down my really small Maxpages site years ago.

LOL! That reminds me of something funny
My friend said to my sister, "Hey, Gullible is written on the back door!" She goes, "Where, let me see!" Then, after noticing there was noting here, he started laughing his head off, and then my sister promptly looked up the word. About that time, I wrote Gullible somewhere... I can't remember, and said "Hey, Gullible is written there!" And she said, "No it's not!" But, then when she found out that it was written there, I got to laugh. It was funny, and stupid.

"Interesting how, though you own a TI-89 and a TI-GRAPH Link, you DON'T like ticalc.org and TI-Graphing calculators. Plus, you have a ticalc.org account. Boy are you a hypocrite"
-I have a TI-89, because I need it for Pre-Calc. I hate the freakin' thing, and I wish it burns.
-I got the GRAPH LINK when I bought the 89, 3 years ago. After that, I bought a Palm, and was much more happier than this 89 crap.
-Why do I have a TI-Calc.org account? Because not all of us like the 83, 83+, and 83SE. Some of us like to come to TI-Calc, only to flame people.
I'm a hypocrit? Look at you, you're so insecure about TI-Calc, that you feel the need to post a comment to help defend TI-Calc.
BTW: Last time I used the 89's Graph Link was about year ago when I used it to cheat on the SAT's.

Hmmm ... "Because not all of us like the 83, 83+, and 83SE." How interesting. I for one don't like the 83 series ... hey, depleateduranium, would you mind showing this guy that he's not the ONLY one that doesn't like the 83 series?
"I'm a hypocrit? Look at you, you're so insecure about TI-Calc, that you feel the need to post a comment to help defend TI-Calc." First, learn to spell correctly. And second, just because I don't like your attitude does NOT mean I feel insecure about ticalc.org. Besides, that doesn't mean you're not a hypocrite. And, third, Guideline 3 for posting News Replies states, "Don't insult or flame other people in your comments. Keep such sentiments to private email, or better yet, avoid them completely."
