SilverLink USB Drivers Released
Posted by Eric on 2 January 2002, 06:51 GMT

Romain Lievin and Julien Blache of the Linux Programmer Group have released a set of drivers for SilverLink, TI's USB link cable. Both Windows and Linux drivers have been released, so developers will be able to easily use the cable now. Check out the project page for screenshots and more information.

Wow, that's great! But why do people buy the USB graphlink for $50 when they can get a black one for $20.00? Is the USB graphlink somehow better?

Some computers don't even *have* serial ports anymore. Mine has only one; my old one had two. My first had... four, I think.

USB's tend to be easier to work with, and the technology is newer. The ports are physically smaller, and compatible opperating systems can recognize USB devices as soon as they are plugged in. You can buy more serial/USB ports if you need them (they would probably come on a PCI card).

I remember when a machine HAD to have the ports on a card, as the only thing that stuck through the case from the mobo was the AT port.

I have a computer with only one serial port and a serial mouse. But then, I just unplug it and use the keyboard only. This is a bit cumbersome when you first start doing it, but then, I've been doing it a long time and have no trouble. Although I suppose some people might want to take the easy route. And, getting serial ports to work when they don't is really tough.

You just proved a fact, and a good point. Most everyone here hates me, and of course they have there reasons. Now what would u do in a situation like this. Get in the fetal position and worship 83's? I don't think so. Thats why i'am expressing my uncomformist attitude in every way possible, which includes flustering your simple minds with intentioul and un intentual spelling mistakes, muhahaha Muhahaha Muha ;=) WereWolf.com "Your either the hunter or the eaten"

Do you ever have anything relevant and/or productive to say? Or is that beyond you abilities?

I respect your right to your own opinion and your right to state it, but you do not have the right to belittle others merely because they do not agree with you.
I do not hate you; only dislike the disruption you cause. And do you ever have something positive to say about others? I must commend you on you tenacity, but is it worth it?

If you're civil to people they are more receptive of your view, dissing people only makes them angry. You don’t' have to agree with others to get along, and contra wise disagreement does not warrant animosity.

I myself am only dismayed and slightly annoyed,
So if it makes a difference you only spurred me to this posting, in 2 minutes I won't care.

And to everyone else, don't say anything, don't reply to him. It only shows him he is getting to you. I will confess to hypocrisy, but this will be the only time I do this. He can post, and well have to look at it, but don't let it get to you.

To TI-Calc Staff: feel free to delete this; I know this is not the forum to post this, but I don't know of another way to contact him.

I'm not going to argue with you, but here's what I have to say:

People will continue to use their 83/+ calculators regardless of what you say about them. So you don't like them?... keep it to yourself, then. Nobody cares.

LOL, like its my first deleted comment...Geez now that was the day.

Now calculator enthusiasts are insane,,,for instance: a program that controls winamp? i laughed so hard when i saw this, what do u people think this is, a quality ipaq, get real; a virtual harddrive program, wow and its basic...but why in hell would you need such a program,,,what does this kids parents do, take his keyboard away to punish him, LOL...No actually that is just sad...Kill yourselves now and save ur souls. ;=) WereWolf.com

Actually, the winamp control program does have a purpose. If you're playing a video game that doesn't support task-switching and you're running winamp in the background, it gives you a way to change what song is playing. BTW, why are you calling the creator some kind of techie geek if your the one spending all your time on the TI calculator forums....

I am the author of that Virtual Harddrive program.
As for it being in BASIC, yeah I know BASIC sucks but I don't know C or asm, and I was able to make it because I could work on it in classes where I had nothing better to do. As for justifying it... well I never expected it to be popular. When I write programs, my first aim is to make something unique. No point in cloning some idea that's been done.
I like things that go beyond games... honestly I don't use my own program or that winamp program, but I like the ideas in them both, and I and the other author made the ideas in to usable programs. (I know his is a lot better though; I might use mine if it had asm speed.) Anyway I'm a pretty amateur programmer, so to take any idea from imagination to working example is good for me. So I justify it as a learning experiance for me that does something that no other program does, even if only a few people are interested.
btw, my program is at the address in the link if you don't know what program is being refered to.

i totally agree...i make unique programs, but expect them to also have some influence on future programmers, i.e. i just released an ebook maker and an ebook for the TI-86; it will be easily ported to all other TI-Calcs, except the TI-80 and 81

I make unique programs too, like my simple tron82 game. ;-) Hopefully, in the future, I can turn it into something better and more complex.

Wow, I just checked that program out, and actually, it seems like it'd be a neat little program. My Desktop has a tendancy to become cluttered (because I don't move everything off to My Pictures, My Music, My Videos, etc. often enough), and if I still used my calculator regularly, I would definately use something like this.

A silly idea, but a useful one, and I'm glad someone has decided to make a program like that. Congrats.

Makes me wonder if someone else who is ranting against it has actually read the program docs?

Well that was all fun and dandy, and no i dont think basic is bad all the time, just in games. Finally, i dont see why you needed to make a useless program if u have the skill to make a program at all?

For instance, creating a hypothetical program that plugs into a cell phone so u can dial the number on the calc?

Now do u see, if u have the intelligence, maybe your just lacking the proper motivation, but you don't need to prove yourself to this community. ;=) yes go to werewolf.com

If someone made that 'hypothetical' program to dial a cellphone number from your calculator, I'd use it, just for the fun of it! It's FUN to program, and people do it as a pasttime, so some may seem useless, when really to someone else, it can be really cool, so if you don't have anything constructive to say, then be quiet. :-þ

I don't own an USB GraphLink, but I have read from both the TiLP developers (Romain Liévin and Julien Blache) and a TI-Connect tester (Olivier Miclo) that it is much faster than the serial GraphLink.

Because USB doesn't suck to deal with. I hate having to deal with serial and parallel port devices. Everything on my PC is USB. The serial and parallel ports are even disabled in the BIOS. I have a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro, and it has two USB ports on it, similar to Mac keyboards. I can easily plug the mouse into the keyboard, and have room for an extra device, such as a Gravis Gamepad Pro, or a Handspring Visor cradle. Windows 2000 generally supports USB devices very well. Just plug them in, and they work. Plug in the gamepad, fire up MAME32, and it works perfectly with no fuss. With serial or parallel port devices, there's always something you have to mess with. Sure, I like playing with stuff, but not all the time. When it comes to hardware, I just want it to work. And before you say it, yes, I know, I should just buy a Mac.

Yup.

Merged libticables 3 and libticalcs 3 yesterday evening into my tree ; so far it went OK.

Need to write the reset pipes stuff, then test the 2 libs, merge TiLP, test the romdump, and decide how to handle the remote control...

If someone has JPEGs of the TI 89/92's keyboards, please mail me. I'm looking for something similar (size and quality) to the VTI/GtkTiEmu skins.

Next release : hmm... sometime between this week-end and the end of january (exams...)

New features (planned) :
- romdump
- remote control
- Grey TIGL
