HP Calculator Development Ending
Posted by Eric on 4 November 2001, 05:05 GMT
Hewlett-Packard has announced that it will be discontinuing its calculator development. Farewell messages have been posted on the newsgroup comp.sys.hp48. Do note that development of HP calculators has happened before, and that the production of current HP calculators will continue.

Sorry to all those who like/own/use HP calcs, it stinks that they're going down. In response to all the cacl age is dead and etc., I would say it's dimmed, but not dead. There are still some active programmers around and ticalc hasn't gone under yet. (btw, not trying to advertise but I am meber of tiworld.calc.org and we're actively programming for a # of calcs)

See that little username and password box that pops up now when you click on the Archives section? It is NOT going to be cool if people have to register with the site in order to download stuff. Of course, I trust that the good people at ticalc.org know what they're doing.
P.S. Don't throw away your TIs yet, Wormz 83(+) is almost finished! :)

Actually, even Hewlett Packard will not be THE Hewlett Packard. They will merge with Compaq, and may be stop to produce many products. Assuming that Compaq already merged with DEC, I will not be surprised that in the future will be only one hardware and only one software company in the world.

ti community dying?

I don't believe the ti community is dying. It seems that this discussion comes up ever year at this time. Most people who just got their calcs for schools have checked out and downloaded all the games they wanted. The people remaining are mostly prgmers. Next yr the same will happen.
Also, we may be losing great prgmers but there are new prgmers everyday entering the community. We must remember that even thought it seems we are losing great prgmers we are making room for new ones to get a glimps of the spotlight. This just might be what they need to make that effort to be great, or dare i say greater!
It's tradgic that the cd got recalled. It was a great chance for many people to open thier eyes and see that there is a ti community. This would have attracted many new future prgmers that are needed to replace the ones the community is losing.
I also wish to see new sites merge on top and give a new fresh look for the ti community. Not saying that the calssic aren't good, but many of us have been there an done that and it's nice to see something new. Also, new sites seem to update more, which really draws people in.

I disagree that the quality of TIs will drop, because no one will buy the product, simply because there IS an alternate solution, the previous TIs.
Too bad for HP, I was wondering what there next calc would be able to do. This is the chance for Sharp and Casio. Since Casio makes the best scientific non-graphing calculators, maybe they could put the same work into their graphing models.
