TI APP Development Contest Results
Posted by Eric on 29 September 2001, 22:10 GMT

Well, it's sure been quiet around here lately, but TI has finally announced the winners to their APP Development Contest, which ended on August 15. The winners receive a paid 3-month opportunity to develop application software for TI, a trip to a calculator conference, and lots of other goodies. Congratulations to the winners.

Update (Eric): TI has notified me that there was an error on the page that has since been fixed. Brandon Sterner's Symbolic Differentiation App was tied for first place, rather than coming in second.

Who should I send an e-mail to if I want something to be posted as a news item?

The news is this:

Does anyone remember when there was an automatically-generated news eBook available daily at http:// members.nbci.com/bubbastinky/ebooks ? Well, I am currently working on (read: perfecting) a perl script that will do the same thing.

The ABC News, Slashdot, and TICalc.org frontpages are available once again in eBook form at http:// lordnightrose.resnet.mtu.edu/cgi-bin/ ebook.pl . This page is updated whenever I visit it, which will be approximately once a day if not more often than that.

If I'm updating the page at the time, then it might take a while to download. Otherwise, it shouldn't take too long.

Enjoy!

P.S. If you have any suggestions (e.g. formatting, other pages to add, etc.), feel free to let me know at lord_nightrose@yahoo.com .

Arg... Perl.

Perl is so mean. I've been trying to get it to work and it doesn't. It's probably 'cause I have a win98 or something.

Works just fine for me. If you have any questions about it, feel free to contact me. I'd be glad to help.

My web site uses Perl extensively. It was originally based on a Windoze 98 system, and has now migrated through Windoze ME and Windoze XP (yes, I said XP... before it came out). All of them work fine.

Is there anything I can download to set a cgi-bin type thing? I went to htmlgoodies.com and in the perl/cgi tutorial it said "The easiest way to find your server's path is to Telnet into your account and, at the prompt, type in: whereis perl" How the heck to you Helnet into your account?!?!

P.S. Where did you learn perl?

Try http://www.imatix.com/html/xitami/ . Xitami is a free, fast web server that offers scripting support for various languages. It's frigging awesome, and quite surprisingly also free.

Wow! It's free? That's weird! I pay for the one I use (vicon) and it doesn't allow perl.

And you have to get this (it's the actual Perl runtimes).

I forgot the second part...

I taught myself Perl. I suggest "SAMS Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days" and "Perl in a Nutshell" by O'Reilly. They are INCREDIBLY helpful.

By the way, when you install Xitami, your CGI-BIN is in the CGI-BIN folder in the root directory.

oh yeah, how do you know if your server allows perl?

     4 October 2001, 16:55 GMT

How to tell if there is perl
eean
(Web Page)

You can use http://www.netcraft.com and see what kind of server you are using (the link is in the upper right corner). If it has Perl in the title, then you for sure have perl; if there isn't that does not necesarily mean that you do not have perl.

Really though, it is one of those things where if you do not know then you probably do not have it. Someone else said they didn't know how to telnet (meaning they probably couldn't) telnet into their server. I do know how you use perl without being able to login to the server.

and God bless morpheus for that!

however, if you want a full, *WORKING* copy it's best to have your friend of a friend of a friend etc. at Microsoft give it to you... which is what I did.

If you don't already are, you might want to try activeperl, it's
just install it and have fun.
Well, if I remember correct, you need to place the perl\bin directory in your path too, but that isn't the amount of work.

Re: Re: Re: TI APP Development Contest Results

I did receive a message tonight. At about 00:00 UTC.
2:00 at my TZ.
It just tells me (rather, "anyone") they're winners of a bunch of stuff, that they should mail through their preferred mail address, and:
that the sdk prizes will be replaced by something els, since the 83Plus sdk is now free, and the 89/92+ sdk is in beta.
Joy, now we're receiving a mistery prize.
Any speculations on what it might gonna be?

I got mine too. Anyway, I think the "mystery prize" may be the full set of slide cases. Or it could be something totally different. Notice in the email, it didn't say anything about TI Interactive or Derive 5, maybe they're gonna give us both. Just speculation on my part. Anyone else got any ideas?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: TI APP Development Contest Results

A careful speculation would not exclude a cbl or cbr,
cbl is priced at $130, cbr at $100, the value of the 83+ sdk was $100.
Then again they might even be gonna give us a GB Color. You never know :-)

i feel, and probably sound retarded.. but what are these cbl's and cbr's? i hear of those ALL the time... and now that you say they are over $100 i want to know what they are

cbl stands for "calculator based laboratory", and cbr stands for "calculator based ranger". I don't know the real difference between the two, but basically, they are things you connect to the calculator, gather data, and use programs/apps to analyze that data. More specific info can be found on the TI website somewhere, but since they changed the site around, I haven't seen anything about them but the apps. Then again, I never went looking for them :)

I'm pretty sure that CBR is only a sonar-based distance sensor, while the CBL has that along with temperature, and a couple of other sensors.

Actually you just attach different sensors to a special port on CBR or CRL, and the different is that CBL has more attachments than CBR. They're quiet cool and I'd like to play with them if not theor price.

Ah, you have quite the point there. It adds even more apprehension to the contest results. What is the mystery prize? We can only speculate ... or wait for TI to tell us.

We now know.

Choice between:
1) CBL
or
2) Home edition of TI interactive
3) derive 5 indiv educ. license.

I choose the first

I do too.

Now, I assume because of the choices, if we get the CBL, we won't get the software. That kinda sucks.

i think we still do, like, if you got Derive, you could ALSO choose the other TI something... i'm not sure.. but that seems like the most logical thing. maybe someone should ask

They already have my address, so I don't really expect them to be asking for it. Even more than these prizes, I would be happier if they would release an AMS update.
Hoping against hope...

how do they have it? and don't they have to email you anyway for some of those choices that you have to choose between 2 prizes?

Oh, they know me :) They also know that I work only with the 68k, so there's really no point in asking me. But they might still e-mail me, I don't know.
