TI Connect Announced
Posted by Eric on 18 July 2001, 11:02 GMT

I'd like to apologize for the recent lack of updates...the whole ticalc.org staff has been jetting all over the place this summer. Personally, I'm approximately 9,000 miles from my usual news-posting location (a.k.a. "home"), but anyway, onto the news. Justin Clifford sent me word of the next-generation TI-Graph Link that TI announed a little while back. It's known as TI Connect, and includes features of the TI-Graph Link software plus a bunch of new ones. Find out more information here. TI Connect is scheduled to be released at the end of this year, but of course, this estimate might change. Check it out anyway.

A VB App? Seems like that would be kinda slow...i know ti calcs aren't very fast, but on the user side it would think a little too much...right?

No, not at all.

vb dosen't always mean slow. For example Visual Basic 6.0 can optimize for speed, and compile actual programs (no pcode). In addition, if a visual basic program uses dll's written (for example) in C, the visual basic program is apt to be faster...

This makes me wonder if The other linking apps are writeen in vb; If I were them, I would want to reuse my linking routines...

yeah, reusing code is nice, but it also means that you're applying older, less efficient technology to a newer program. The old linking routines are slower than the new ones they've designed.

FYI, this has been listed on TI's site for many months now -- I myself don't anticipate a release any time soon.

Just what I was going to say! It's been announced for several months.

IIRC, we were also given a firm date from TI for 89/92+ documentation (something toward the end of 2000), which was not met. The resulting SDK has been much more than I ever expected, but I don't recommend people go expecting and demanding TI-Connect before the end of this year.

This is true, but link software is much more 'commercial' than an SDK for user-end development.

And since they have to do tech-support for links, it would be to their advantage to create a better link program.

Looks more simpler and organized. Oh, well, as long as the mysreious little wires inside the plastic insulation accomplish some sort of "cool-game -> calc" routine

TI is trying to make a program for idiots, who can't get old TI-graph link to work properly. In other words a piece of software following 83 Silver Edition.

It seems that this is not just a follow-up for the SE, but is new software that fully supports Windows ME/2000, unlike the current graph-link software.

I got Windows 2000 Pro and it works fine. Unlike Win98/ME, it doesn't freeze my screen for 5 secs during transfer on win2k. Graph link takes up 100% of my CPU.

Long live TI-73/80/81/82/85/86/89/92x
boo TI-83!

No, 82, and 83 (+, +SE) all use a 96x64 pixel display driven by a toshiba t6a04. Of course TI now has the 'protections' built in.

The screen of the 82 is like blue on green. 83 and 83+ have a much higher contrast than an 82.

There are like 3 types of LCD, high quality, medium quality, and low quality. 82 would be low quality. I do not know about 83 and 83+ or 86, though 86 seems to be higher quality.

No, there are differences other then the display. There are String Variables, you can make your own lists and name them, and... I dunno. :-) But, yea, there's more differences.
