Balloon 86 Released
Posted by Eric on 30 May 2001, 20:58 GMT

BalloonTo continue on this recent deluge of TI-86 material, we bring you a port of Andreas Ess's classic TI-85 side scrollers, Balloon v1.0. Up until now TI-86 users have been able to run Balloon with a TI-85 emulator, but finally we have a TI-86 version as well, thanks to Andreas Finne. In case you're not familiar with the concept, Balloon's a game where you're trying to weave your way through traps, enemies, and that danged phenomenon some call gravity.

wouldnt they really have had to 'remember' it a while ago? i may not know assembly, but i know it takes more than a day to make a good game

Cool! I've tried the 85 version under Rascall 0.9, but it crashed every time :(

Good to see that people are releasing more progs for the 86 now.

I ran the 85 version under ASE without any trouble. It worked just as well as on my friends 85. If games were made that required an overclocked calc we could get some better performance.

Hey, don't bash the 86. I've got both an 86 and an 89, and I think people who own jsut an 86 still deserve respect for not getting an 83/83plus/83plus even more crap (i.e. silver edition). The 86 is at least a mathematically capable calcualtor, and aside from that, it's got some games that really rock out (Ztetris link anyone?). All in all, I'm proud to own an 86. It's almost as good as the 89, or at least a step or two above anything below it.

Before I got my 89 I had a 86 and I loved it. The only reason I bought the 89 was that it was better for Calculus IB.

same here. I hate it when people ask me why I'm using my 86 and not my 89, but I tell them its because the games, and then they reply with something stupid like "you wasted your money you should have gotten a 83 if its for the games". I think that 86's are definetly the second to best calc out there, with 89's as the best(because of its math abilities). 92 and its plus addition are just to bulky.

I completely agree with you. I have one from each of the 3 series (I got the 83 Silver first), and I only bring the 86 to school. I like to use it for programming and gaming.

people are finally remembering the 86!

The TI-86 is superior to the 83Plus in everything but memory. It allows you to use lowercase and special charachters in strings, and functions like "sin" are treated as s-i-n instead of [sin]. Therefore if you type the lowercase letters s-i-n-x it will compute the sine of the value of the x variable. Similarly for other functions. It can text-compile basic code just like if you wrote it on the computer.-no finding tokens by navigating through menus. It has a nice logical menu interface with an especially programmer- friendly [EXIT] button. And it has some more advanced math features. TI should start making 86-es with the 1.54M flash rom modules, it would surely sell. Graphing calcs 86 and below all have a z80 processor. The clock speed doesn't affect the capabilities(the 6MHz 83p can run everything the 15MHz 83p Silver Edition can). What mekes the difference is the given hardware like processor type, screen size and memory. The 86 has a 64X128 screen and the 83series has 64X92. So an 86 would take 128/92 ~ 1.31 times longer to graph the same function as an 83p. It's nice that programmers are developing for this calculator, whose OS was really a work of genius and that allows for easy asm support through the "Asm(" function.

I think that FLASH memory is great just because it is not lost in case of a crash or low batteries. So, in case of a crash, you do not need to put everything back on an 83+ or 89, but you do on an 86.

Also, 86 is actually slower than an 85 and other z80 calcs because it has sheets of RAM (source: TI-86 FAQ (ti.com)). It is a very nice calculator.

Hey wait a minute, you're that annoying guy who keeps whining about Evil Dead 89. I believe you should never post again as long as you live. It would improve TIcalc.org 10 fold.

Sit down, Shut up, Quit yer whining, and go set your school on fire or something.

Hey, I'm thinking of getting a TI-86. I have a 82 and a 73. Is there any "new and good" calc out there that anyone suggests getting?
