Phoenix v1.0 Released
Posted by Eric on 14 February 2001, 23:40 GMT

Hmm...we haven't posted on Phoenix in a while, have we? Well then, Patrick Davidson has come up with a pretty substantial update to the Z80 series of his popular shoot-em-up game. Finally the versions for the TI-82, TI-83, TI-83+, TI-85, and the TI-86 rival the original versions for the 68K calculators (well, except for the screen size, of course). An external level set has also been released; see the file updates section for more.

why yes, my latest projects are...

getting my cat neutered, passing this god-awful kidney stone, and, oh yeah, going to the bathroom (I really gotta take a piss!!!)

That's better.

Wait a sec, you meant the other Patrick, didn't you? My bad.

Yes, I always have new projects. Unfortunately, it seems that I always have far fewer new releases.

For the Z80 calculators, I really only have two "new" projects besides this. One, of course, would be a grayscale shoot-em-up game (which is more like a "sequel" to this one than just an update to it). The other is a platform game, ehich I have only barely started on. This one (the "classic" Phoenix) is not quite finished either; as you can probably guess from various other programs I have released, I rarely stop at version 1.0.

I do have projects on the 68K calculators as well. The foremost of these is the sequel to Phoenix there, Phoenix II, which is of course in grayscale. A test version of this (which had the grayscale graphics implemented, but no shop or high scores, and about half the levels of the "classic" Phoenix) was semi-released a few months ago, but didn't seem interesting to many people. Anyways, over the next few months, the gameplay has been redesigned, and backgrounds added, and many other things, making this quite an old "new" project. I do hope to at least release version 0.01 of this fairly soon.

I don't really want to limit myself to this forever, so I have thought of also starting an RPG for the Z80 calculators, as well as a platform game and a Wolfenstein-like game on 68K.

Of course, please keep in mind that I'm not promising that any of the above will ever be released (I'd like to think I know better than to make promises about future programs).

Sounds cool. I personally think that Phoenix is great as is, but grayscale graphics couldn't hurt. =-) About Phoenix II, are you working on it alone? There is another one called Phoenix II: Brutality (and the person who posted news items about it on tinews.net posted them in ALL CAPS) but it looked to me that someone basically took phoenix source and changed graphics. Did you have something to do with this one, or was that someone else? I'll be interested to see any new projects you create in the future, I'm sure they'll be great.

Welcome to the bizarre world of Phoenix II!

There are actually two different projects which are called Phoenix II:

1) There is the program called 'Phoenix II: Brutality' which was made by 'Nizzy'. I don't have much information on this beyond what was probably posted on TI-News. I do know the author has stated he intends to make (or maybe has made by now) much larger changes to the code, not just the graphics, and also that the program will be renamed to 'Quantum: Brutality'. He also said he would include the source code with the next version.

2) Then, there is 'Phoenix II'. I am the programmer of this, and Jeff Chai is designing the graphics. This is the one that I mentioned before. Very early versions of this (without backgrounds or the "new" gameplay) were mentioned on TI-News at one point.

How can you implement greyscale? Can you show me? I'm kind of new to asm but I'd love to learn.

That is if it's possible on my TI-83 Plus :)

I was actually referring to making a grayscale version of Phoenix on other calculators, not the TI-83 Plus.

There has been some discussion of possible ways to make grayscale on the TI-83 Plus on the assembly-83 mailing list.

Also note that Sam Heald (from the Void) is developing a grayscale version of Subhunt on the TI-82. He says he won't port it to other calculators, but the TI-83 Plus is at least similar to the TI-82 in terms of the display so it's probably possible to do something similar.

Thanx. No to be stuck up, but I think you're probably the best programmer in the TI-Community.

Cool, no offence 'cause Pheonix is the best game ever, but it gets kind of old after beating it lots of times. The External levels will make this game 10 times better!

Ohhh. External levels, eh? That'll be pretty nice. When are they being released. The same level <i>does</i> get borring after 100 times of gameplay.
Are there any currently released?

Wow I agree, the levels for the 85 are pretty coll, but after time and time o beating it, it gets redundant. After adding externeal levels, it should get very interesting. Keep up the good work!
