RPG Renaissance, Part II
Posted by Eric on 11 February 2001, 00:18 GMT

Looks like Justin Karneges, who's been pretty dormant in the TI scene for the last couple of years, has suddenly sprung to life:

"After seeing the post about Dying Eyes 83+, we thought it might be possible to port Joltima to the TI-83+ as well. Hideaki Omuro started by making an optimized version for the TI-82. He even added some new graphics and the game was still 3k smaller than the original. Then, with a little bit of CrASH magic, it was ported to the 83+ and it actually works! This new optimized version of Joltima was then ported back to the TI-83, and David Phillips helped out to make new TI-85 and TI-86 ports."

So thanks to Sam Heald for inspiring this, and you can now proceed to download Joltima for the TI-82, TI-83, TI-83+, TI-85, and the TI-86. Phew.

And just so we can increase our links-per-news-article ratio some more, here's another: the Joltima homepage. Check out screenshots, a features list, and other useful specs.

It is important to remember that the 89 and 92(+) are the more powerful calcs that can be used more readily in RPG's. I remember hearing somewhere that the screen buffer on the 89 and 92(+) is far larger than those on the Z80 calcs, allowing much faster scrolling, therefore better RPG's and bird's eye views for games like the Bomberman clones(BigDyna, Bomberboy, Bomb89, BomberMaze).
It is a good idea to port this to the 68k calcs. I can't do it, but there is always someone out there who can.

BTW, I think I have the first comment.

The 89 and 92+ use a 68k cpu. Joltima is written for a z80. It would require a complete rewrite to run on a 68k calc.

Yeah, I hate z80, it doesn't have libs and a crappy screen buffer.
I am working with Eric Meeks on Zelda89, and the scrolling is much better than it would be on a z80!

Not having libraries is a GOOD thing! Have you seen Zelda 86? I don't see how the scrolling could get much better.

I agree, because I have an 89 and a 92 but no z80 calcs.

My HW2 89, doesn't show grey-scale in almost every game that has grey-scale gfx in it (solar striker, pac-man). What's the reason of it? Can anybody help?
Even though my reply isn't related to this discussion, I posted it here, because I just didn't know where else.

Thanks!

I would make one, but I don't have an 89 or a 92. If anyone wants to buy me an 89, I would make a greyscale RPG in C.

People with 89's or 92+'s should check out Zenith Saga, see the url above.

Wow. All these TI-83 Plus games, applications, etc., and so little time to use them. Hey, start working on something like modems for the calculator. :)

Well, you can already plug your calculator into your graphlink into an external modem for the purposes of telnetting, as described here: http:// affinix.com/~justin/programs/telnet83/
Fission Labs is also working on a modem, you can get more info here: http://fission2.com/labs/tiv.htm
Not sure how it's different from a regular modem tho.

Yeah. All this stuff sounds good, but someone should make a clip on modem or something with an application that works with the clip on modem. TI should make that... hmm... What's their address to suggest something?

Thanks for the links above. :) I'll check them out.

I would like to see a 'network' capability for calculators. Is this possible? Just think, mulitplayer strategy games or something else! Maybe they could use a hub? :-)

It is great to see a renewed interest in TI-RPG's...all the best Calc RPG programers quit making games years ago, and now because of the 83Plus software most people don't even know about any of the great RPG's calculator. I hope that more people will continue to port 83 RPG's to 83Plus, I also hope that this sparks some creativity in the programing world and that we get more Calc RPG's. I work with Alienhead productions, creator 2 Gundam Wing RPG's, and we are curently working on a full conversion of the SNES game Chrono Trigger, I hope that when it's released gamer's will be craving new RPG's because of this recent trend.

I have seen those pics but I know it will never be able to down-grade to the TI-83 or 83Plus. I'll have some info and screen shots of my Chrono Trigger at www7.Alienhead.SomeWhere.Net soon.

We are going to make about 4 or 5 different programs, or packs, which you just move you save file (a list) from one to the other.
