RPG Renaissance, Part II
Posted by Eric on 11 February 2001, 00:18 GMT

Looks like Justin Karneges, who's been pretty dormant in the TI scene for the last couple of years, has suddenly sprung to life:

"After seeing the post about Dying Eyes 83+, we thought it might be possible to port Joltima to the TI-83+ as well. Hideaki Omuro started by making an optimized version for the TI-82. He even added some new graphics and the game was still 3k smaller than the original. Then, with a little bit of CrASH magic, it was ported to the 83+ and it actually works! This new optimized version of Joltima was then ported back to the TI-83, and David Phillips helped out to make new TI-85 and TI-86 ports."

So thanks to Sam Heald for inspiring this, and you can now proceed to download Joltima for the TI-82, TI-83, TI-83+, TI-85, and the TI-86. Phew.

And just so we can increase our links-per-news-article ratio some more, here's another: the Joltima homepage. Check out screenshots, a features list, and other useful specs.

Unfortunately, this article seems to forget Golvellius: Valley of Doom. This is a grayscale RPG for the TI-86 which was recently released by James Vernon of the TCPA.

has anyone bothered to point out the fact that joltima doesnt run on a shell(that i know of). mirage OS doesnt recognise the 83+ version, so it must be run UNARCHIVED from the normal programs menu, and the asm load program must be present. this is a major setback for me (the only reason i dont have it on my 83+) because i simply cant have that much ram dedicated to the game and effectively use other programs also. if someone knows how to make mirageos recognise it so that it is playable from the archive, please post it. otherwise, i will be missing out on an excellent game.

Just make a group containing Joltima and the loader, then delete Joltima from ram.

When you want to save, just re-group it when you want to run anything else.

This should be no problem unless you play 10,000 times!

Of course it won't run in any current shells

I got your email and responded to it, but it was returned undeliverable..

Anyhow, the TI-83+ version does not play from any shell at this time because no shell supports a game of this size. I thought this would be obvious =)

The program "ZJLOAD" is pretty much the CrASH shell but without a user interface. Maybe one day there will be a full CrASH for TI-83+, or perhaps one day MirageOS or Ion will support large programs. Until then, yes you need that loader.

Have fun!

hey again...
first of all, thanks for responding. it's nice to see a programmer following up on his work. sorry you couldnt reply to my e-mail, my ISP sucks (im getting a new one soon!^.^) and e-mails only occasionally go through. anyway, the reason i was wondering why joltima cant be recognised by mirage os is that dying eyes(which i just finished, the main reason i nead another huge rpg!) WAS recognised by mirage os. the void productions site has something underneath it's news headline as an updating saying something like "further tweaking has allowed the program to be compatable with mirage os". i'm sure that you know the reason why dying eyes is shell-recognisable and joltima is not, but i am lost :P. i do know some general knowledge of programming, memory, etc. so if you want to dish out a bunch of calculator technical works stuff to explain why it wont work, go right ahead, ill probably understand some of it ^.^. if you dont want to reply, thats fine, too, im just being curious and i dont want to let go of the game so easily. till next time...

The reason ION/Mirage OS does not recognize Joltima is because the program was not written as a ION program, but rather as a TI-OS hack. I already did a small rewrite with ION support, so get it at the Joltima page! (link in article)
