calc.org Updates, Heads Roll
Posted by Nick & Eric on 10 February 2001, 08:41 GMT

In a surprising twist of fate for all those involved, calc.org (formerly Dimension-TI) decided to actually update today, according to sources close to the calc.org administrators.

"When we actually realized that one could 'update,' or overwrite older files with newer, more complete versions, we went to work at trying to 'update' the site as much as possible," reports calc.org founder and editor-in-chief, Adam Berlinsky-Schinesteinbergiel. "We proceeded to 'update' all of the pages on our site, and finally we're all done. More or less, anyway. We're still trying to figure out how to 'update' that programs section of ours."

Prior to this calc.org "updating," no current members of the site had done any work whatsoever, instead using calc.org as a springboard for other more interesting jobs (*cough*, see Eric's profile). Comments a current calc.org staff member: "There's still a Dim-TI? I thought it died in the last round of dot-com layoffs."

Former ticalc.org editor Nick Disabato was unavailable for comment at the time, as he was reportedly last seen holding a half-empty glass bottle in a paper bag in an obscure alley on Lower Wacker Drive. When questioned, he threw the bottle at reporters, saying to "get off [his] porch."

As usual, our Security Chief did absolutely nothing to mark the occasion. "Crazy Americans," reports the hardcore Swede.

Ticalc- just to let you know, this is one of the best written articles you've made in a while. =-) You've been doing a very good job lately with very frequent news updates.

One thing I like that ticalc.org doesn't have is the betas section of the program archive. This way people who want to beta test can register, and developers can easily find beta testers. I hope people use the add beta feature so that the normal program archives doesn't get so cluttered with games that aren't finished.

I would agree about the beta testing section. Lots of times I download things thinking they are done but they are only in beta. A beta only section would make it easier for programmers such as myself to help debug stuff.

Yes, I know about that. I should have been more specific. What I meant was a _good_ betas section. ticalc.org's beta system is incredibly unorganized, lacks screenshots and program files, and lacks the ability to update and change information. All it is a message board that is a complete mess. I'm sorry, but although I usually prefer this site, calc.org actually does beat ticalc.org in this aspect.

What I love about calc.org is the ticalc.org news section at the bottom. It looks like the list is created by a machine, because "Calc.org updated, heads roll" now appears at the bottom of calc.org's own page!

It is created by a machine, or rather, software on a machine. I don't know how it works, but it uses something called RSS. (feel free to elaborate)

Okay - here's elaboration. The RDF (similar to RSS) file resides on the server that has the headlines, in this case, ticalc.org's server. It's a mini-scripting language that shows the site's name, an optional image, headlines, other info, etc. Then on calc.org's server, a script is automatically run (with a cron job) every half hour that grabs that file and retrieves the headlines from it.
